Appendix 6A. DICK FAMILIES

FAMILY OF JOHN AND JENNY DICK

  1. John Dick must have been born before 1805. He may have been an elder brother of our ancestor, Robert Dick. John married Jane or Jenny McNeely and they lived in Mullaghboy. Their children:
    1. Margaret Dick was born in Mullaghboy on Dec.12, 1829, and was baptized on Dec.18, 1829.
    2. Jenny Dick was born in Mullaghboy on Aug.28, 1832, and was baptized on Sep.4, 1832.
    3. Mary Ann Dick was born in Mullaghboy on Mar.3, 1834, and was baptized on Mar.12, 1834.
    4. John Dick was born in Mullaghboy on May 16, 1835, and was baptized on May 19, 1835.
    5. Samuel Dick was born in Ballymoney on Mar.16, 1837, and was baptized on Mar.30, 1837.
    6. Jenny Dick was born in Ballymoney on Mar.16, 1838, and was baptized on Apr.29, 1838.
    7. Susanna Nelson Dick was born in Ballymoney on Nov.23, 1842, and was baptized on Dec.18, 1842.

FAMILY OF SAMUEL AND MARGARET DICK

  1. Samuel Dick was born about 1777 and became a blacksmith in Mullaghboy. It is possible that Samuel was a brother to our Robert Dick and it is also possible that they were both sons of the James Dick who signed the letter of loyalty published by the Belfast News Letter in 1772. However we have no direct evidence to support either of these speculations. In 1817 at the age of 40, Samuel married a woman named Margaret born about 1780. Samuel must have died before 1851, for in the census of that year, Margaret is listed as living in the townland of Curran and Drumalis near Larne with her daughter, Margaret. It is also possible that the Samuel's widow is the Margaret Dick who is listed in the 1834 tithe applotment lists as holding a 6 acre parcel of land in Mullaghboy. Samuel and Margaret Dick had at least two children:
    1. James Dick was born in 1818 and followed his father as a blacksmith in Mullaghboy. He was married twice. We do not know who his first wife was; his second wife was Jane Ross Fleck of Ballymoney, born about 1825, whom he married on Mar.7, 1864, in Ballycarry Presbyterian Church. William Hawthorne Fleck and Agnes Fleck were witnesses. Jane Ross Fleck's father was Robert Fleck, a farmer. In the Griffith Valuation of about 1860, James is listed as renting from Samuel Arthur a house and small garden in Mullaghboy worth 5 shillings. James died before 1901 for his widow, Jane Ross Dick, is listed as living with her niece, Mary E. Hawthorne, and her family in Ballymuldrough, Islandmagee in the 1901 Census. James Dick had at least one child by his first wife:
      1. Ann Dick married William McAfferty in the First Islandmagee Presbyterian Church on Aug.24, 1860. William was a bachelor and a sailor, a resident of Ballytober, Islandmagee, at the time of the marriage. Ann and William were living in Ballydown when their daughter Sarah was born. They had at least one child:
        1. Sarah Davies McCafferty was born on Mar.6, 1870, in Ballydown, Islandmagee.
    2. Margaret Dick was born in 1822. In 1845, she was married to Patrick O'Brien in the First Islandmagee Presbyterian Church. Patrick was a full-age, bachelor, gardener of Larne, born about 1824, whose father, Daniel O'Brien was a shoemaker. James Dick and Thomas Long were witnesses. In the 1851 Census, Margaret and Patrick O'Brine are listed as living in the townland of Curran and Drumalis, Larne, with their children, Robert, Hugh and Susan as well as their Margaret's mother, Margaret Dick. Patrick is listed as a gardener. Margaret and Patrick's children:
      1. Robert O'Brien was born about 1846 and is listed as living near Larne with his parents in the 1851 Census.
      2. Hugh O'Brien was born about 1848 and is listed as living near Larne with his parents in the 1851 Census.
      3. Susan O'Brien was born about 1850 and is listed as living near Larne with her parents in the 1851 Census.

FAMILY OF CAMPBELL AND ISABELLA DICK

  1. Campbell Dick, born in 1737, married Isabella Reilley, born in 1739. They lived and died in Ballycarry, parish of Templecorran, County Antrim. Campbell died on Feb.2, 1814, and Isabella on May 5, 1814, as recorded on the following gravestone (a low pink stone with the last line partly buried) in Templecorran Graveyard:
    DICK. Here lieth the body of Camble Dick, who departed this life February the 2 aged 77. Also his wife Isabella Reilley, departed May the 5 each in 1814 aged 75 years.
    Campbell and Isabella had at least one child:
    1. Edmonstone Dick was born in 1763 in Ballycarry. He married Mary ?, born in 1767. They lived and died in Ballycarry. Edmonstone died on May 17, 1847, and Mary on Aug.28, 1851, as recorded on the following gravestone in Templecorran Graveyard:
      DICK. Erected to the memory of Edmonstone Dick, who died 17th May 1847 aged 84 years. Also his wife Mary, who died 28th August 1851 aged 84 years. Also their son William Dick, who died 10th Feby. 1873 aged 66 years. And his wife Jennet, who died 15th Decr. 1891 aged 80 years. Also John Dick, son of the above-named William Dick, who died 16th December 1925 aged 74 years and his wife, Susan, who died 2nd January 1937 aged 86 years.
      Edmonstone and Mary had at least one child:
      1. William Edmonstone Dick was born on Oct.30, 1807, in Hillhead, County Antrim, and became a farmer. About 1836, when he was 28, he married Jennet Barron, born in 1811, the daughter of William Barron. As recorded in the above gravestone inscription in Templecorran Graveyard, William died on Feb.10, 1873, aged 65, and Jennet died on Dec.15, 1891, aged 80. William and Jennet had a large family:
        1. Robert Dick was born on Oct.30, 1837, in Ballycarry. He married Catherine Ferguson and they had two children:
          1. Janie Dick
          2. Ruby Dick
        2. Mary Dick was born on Aug.8, 1839, in Ballycarry. On Jun.9, 1864, in Ballycarry Presbyterian Church, she married Richard Penny of Broadisland, a farmer born in 1837, the son of Andrew Penny and Dorothea Hagan. The witnesses were James Arthurs and Eliza Dick. Richard died in 1912, aged 75, and Mary on Jul.21, 1916, aged 76. They had a large family:
          1. William Penny was born in 1865, died in 1949.
          2. Andrew Penny was born in 1867, died in 1943.
          3. Elizabeth Penny was born in 1869.
          4. Dora Penny was born on Aug.13, 1871, in Ballycarry.
          5. John Penny was born on Feb.7, 1873, and christened in Ballycarry Presbyterian Church.
          6. Jane Penny was born in 1876.
          7. Robert Penny was born on Jan.8, 1878.
          8. Richard Penny was born in 1880, died in 1967.
        3. James Dick was born on Sep.11, 1841, in Ballycarry and became a farmer in Broadisland. On Oct.6, 1865, in the First Presbyterian Church in Larne, he was married to Bessie Jane Burns, born in 1846, the daughter of Alexander Burns, a farmer. James's residence is given as Broadisland, Bessie's as Magheramourne. Bessie died in Ballycarry on Feb.6, 1887, at the age of 41 and was buried in Templecorran Graveyard:
          DICK. Erected by James Dick in memory of his beloved wife Bessie Jane who died 6th Feby. 1887 aged 41 years. Also his sister Agnes Blair, wife of William Blair, who died 20th Feb. 1922 aged 76 years.
          James and Bessie had nine children:
          1. Robert Edmonston Dick was born in Ballyhove, Glynn, on Jan.7, 1866.
          2. Mary Gordon Dick was born in Ballyhove, Glynn, on Feb.23, 1868.
          3. William Dick was born in Hillhead on Feb.6, 1871.
          4. Anna Bella Dick was born in NW Ballycarry on Sep.10, 1873.
          5. Jinney Dick was born in NW Ballycarry on Feb.22, 1876.
          6. Elizabeth Alexander Dick was born in NW Ballycarry on Aug.23, 1878.
          7. James Dick was born in NW Ballycarry on Oct.21, 1880.
          8. Alexander Dick was born in Hillhead in 1882.
          9. Ruby Dick was born in Hillhead in 1886.
        4. Eliza Dick was born on Oct.3, 1843, in Ballycarry. On Oct.17, 1871, in Ballycarry Presbyterian Church when she was 28 and resident in Broadisland, she married Robert Wilson of Magheramorne, a farmer, the son of James Wilson. The witnesses were James Wilson and Isabella Dick. Eliza and Robert had two children:
          1. Minnie Wilson who married ? Semple.
          2. Maggie Wilson.
        5. Agnes Dick was born on Jan.13, 1846, in Ballycarry. On Jan.22, 1875, in Carncastle Presbyterian Church, Agnes aged 29 and a resident of Ballycarry, married William Blair, born about 1834, a farmer resident in Ballyvallough, the son of farmer Daniel Blair. The witnesses were John McMaster and Isabella Dick. Agnes died in Ballycarry on Feb.20, 1922, aged 76 and is buried in Templecorran Graveyard. William and Agnes had a daughter:
          1. Jane Blair
        6. William Edmonston Dick was born on May 17, 1848, in Ballycarry and became a grocer in Hillhead. On Oct.30, 1873, in Second Larne Presbyterian Church, William, aged 25, a resident of Ballycarry, was married to Lizzie L. Dempsey, born about 1854, a resident of Ballycarry, the daughter of William Dempsey. The witnesses were Robert Dick and Jane C. McKee. William died in Ballycarry on Jan.28, 1874, at the age of 25 and was buried in Templecorran Graveyard:
          DICK. Erected to the memory of William Edmonston Dick who died 28th January 1874 aged 25 years. Also Susan, only and much loved child of John and Susan Dick, who died 6th Feby. 1903 aged 26 years.
          William and Lizzie had a daughter:
          1. Eliza Cambridge Dick was born on Oct.3, 1874, in Oldmill, Templecorran. She became a school teacher.
        7. John Dick was born on Dec.27, 1850, in Ballycarry and became a clerk. He married Susan Arthurs and, in the 1901 Census, they are listed with their daughter Susan as living in Ballylegg, Glynn. Their daughter:
          1. Susan Dick was born on Sep.24, 1877, in Hillhead, Templecorran. She died in Ballycarry on Feb.20, 1903, at the age of 26 and is buried in Templecorran Graveyard (see above gravestone inscription).
        8. Isabella Dick was born on Nov.14, 1854. She married Robert Millikin.

FAMILY OF THOMAS AND JANE DICK

  1. Thomas Dick was born in 1763 in ``Balimony'', Ireland (according to Sandra Sheldon contacted through the genealogy forum) and may also have been a brother to our Robert Dick. Thomas emigrated (perhaps with his first wife) to USA. He was married twice, first in 1789 to Jane McCoy with whom he had three children. Jane died in 1798 and Thomas was married again to Elizabeth May. Thomas died in Highland, Ohio. Thomas's children:
    1. Quintin Dick, the first child of Thomas and Jane, was born in 1792.
    2. Maraet Dick, the second child of Thomas and Jane, was born in 1794 and married John Gray.
    3. Elizabeth Dick, the third child of Thomas and Jane, was born in 1796 and married Isaac Black.
    4. MaryAnn Dick, the first child of Thomas and Elizabeth, was born in 1800 and married Richard Lucas.
    5. James Campbell Dick was born in 1801.
    6. Sally Dick was born in 1802 and married Hugh Lucas.
    7. Campbell Graham Dick was born in 1804.
    8. Nancy Dick was born in 1806.
    9. Melinda Dick was born in 1807.
    10. Wincy? May Dick was born in 1809.
    11. Jane Dick was born in 18??.
    12. Isabella Dick was born in 1813.
