Appendix 6A. PALMER FAMILIES

CHILDREN OF JAMES PALMER OF PORTAVOGIE:
The following is a list of individuals whose father was James Palmer but who cannot as yet be placed because there were several simultaneous James Palmers living in or near Portavogie at that time.

Agnes Palmer of Portavogie, the daughter of farmer James Palmer, was married on Dec.4, 1865, in Glastry Meetinghouse to Henry Adair, a labourer from Portavogie whose father was shoemaker William Adair. James and Ann Palmer were witnesses. Their children:

William Adair was born in 1866.
Eliza Adair was born in 1868 and must have died as an infant.
Eliza Adair was born in 1871.

James Palmer was born about 1825, the son of James Palmer. This may well be the James Palmer, son of James Palmer, who was baptized in Kircubbin Presbyterian Church on Apr.14, 1824. On Jun.17, 1850, James Palmer, a 20-year-old sailor from Portavogie whose father was the labourer James Palmer, was married in Newtownards Registry Office to Sarah Palmer, 21, from Portavogie, the daughter of fisherman James Palmer. James is listed as a fisherman on his daughter's birth certificate. The following gravestone in Ballyhalbert Old Graveyard could refer to James: "Erected by James Palmer of Newtownards for daughter Sarah died Dec.20, 1854, age 3. Above James Palmer died Oct.22, 1864, age 38." It also seems likely that this Sarah is the 72-year-old widow and retired farmer recorded in the 1901 Census. The children of James and Sarah Palmer are:

Sarah Palmer was born about 1851 and died on Dec.20, 1854.
Thomas Palmer was born about 1863. On Dec.26, 1892, in Millisle Presbyterian Church he was married to Ellen Jane McGimpsey; they are recorded in the 1901 Census as a 38-year-old farmer and his 35-year-old wife living in the house with his mother, Sarah. In the 1911 Census, they are recorded as Thomas Palmer, a 40-year-old Presbyterian farmer and his 40-year-old wife, Ellen Jane, living in House #215, in Portavogie, Ballyhalbert, with their 6 children as listed below. Their children:

James Palmer, born about 1894, is recorded in the 1901 Census as a 7-year-old farmer's son living with his parents. In the 1911 Census he is listed as a 17-year-old postman living in Portavogie with his parents.
Thomas John Palmer born about 1896, is recorded in the 1901 Census as a 5-year-old farmer's son living with his parents. In the 1911 Census he is listed as a 15-year-old schoolboy living in Portavogie with his parents.
David Palmer born about 1899, is recorded in the 1901 Census as a 2-year-old farmer's son living with his parents. In the 1911 Census he is listed as a 13-year-old schoolboy living in Portavogie with his parents.
William Palmer born about 1901, is recorded in the 1911 Census as a 9-year-old schoolboy living in Portavogie with his parents.
Robert Palmer born about 1903, is recorded in the 1911 Census as a 7-year-old schoolboy living in Portavogie with his parents.
Samuel Palmer born about 1905, is recorded in the 1911 Census as a 5-year-old schoolboy living in Portavogie with his parents.

FAMILY OF ADAM PALMER:

Adam Palmer of Magheradrool married Mary Castles on Jun.8, 1709, in Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church, Rev. Henry Livingston presiding. They had at least four children:

James Palmer was baptized in Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church on Mar.28, 1706, and may have been a child of Adam's father.
Thomas Palmer was baptized in Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church on Dec.22, 1709.
James Palmer was baptized in Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church on Feb.8, 1713.
Mary Palmer was baptized in Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church on Feb.20, 1716.

FAMILY OF JOHN PALMER:

John Palmer of Portavogie was born about 1747. On Dec.12, 1824, John Palmer of Ballyeasborough was married in the Glastry Meetinghouse to Eliza Kennedy (alias Beggs - she must have been a widow) of Ballyeasborough. Eliza was born about 1758. The witnesses were John McMullen and John Thompson. John and Eliza are remembered on the following gravestone in the Ballyhalbert Old Graveyard: PALMER. Elizabeth Kennedy wife to John Palmer of Portavogie died Mar.26, 1797, age 39 also her daughter Mary Palmer died Jan.5, 1795, age 7 also John Palmer of Portavogie died Mar.16, 1819, age 72. Also John McMullan of Portavogie died Aug.22, 1863, age 71. Marianne Palmer nee Martin wife of Adam of Portavogie died at her residence Kircubbin Mar.21, 1907, age 85. Rachel McMullen, a twin who, with her sister Mary, was born about 1794. Children of John and Elizabeth Palmer:

Mary Palmer born about 1788 died as a child and is remembered on the above gravestone.
John Palmer, a farmer of Portavogie, Ballyhalbert, married Rachel McMullan who was born about 1794. Rachel is buried in the Ballyhalbert Old Graveyard where her gravestone reads: PALMER. Erected by Adam Palmer for mum Rachel McMullan alias Palmer died May 24, 1870, age 76. Above Adam who died at his residence in Kircubbin on Nov.26, 1912, age 96. Daughter Mary Jane died Feb.25, 1950, aged 90 yrs. Daughter Margaret died Mar.6, 1954, aged 98 yrs. Children of John and Rachel Palmer:

Adam Palmer was born about 1816. On Mar.16, 1849, in Glastry Meetinghouse, Adam Palmer, 21, bachelor, farmer, of Portavogie, Ballyhalbert (father: John Palmer, farmer) was married to Mary Ann Martin, 21, spinster, dressmaker, of B.cranbeg, parish of Ardkeen (father: William Martin, farmer). They are listed in the 1901 Census as an 80-year-old farmer and his 76-year-old wife living at Rockcrest, Main Street, Kircubbin with two daughters and a granddaughter listed below. Mary Anne died in Kircubbin Mar.21, 1907, age 85, and Adam died in Kircubbin on Nov.26, 1912, age 96, as the above gravestones attest. The children of Adam and Mary Anne Palmer:

Rachel Palmer was born about 1855 and is listed in the 1901 census as a 46-year-old widowed housekeeper living with her parents in Kircubbin. She is similarly listed in the 1911 Census. On May 15, 1877, in the Glastry Meetinghouse, Rachel Palmer was married to James Gaw. James died in 1882 and Rachel in 1938. They are buried in the Glastry Presbyterian Graveyard where their gravestone reads: GAW. Erected by Rachel Gaw in memory of her husband James Gaw, died 13 Feb. 1882 aged 35 yrs. Also above Rachel Gaw who died 16 August 1938 age 87 yrs. Portavogie and Kircubbin.
Margaret Palmer was born about 1861. She is listed as a 50-year-old unmarried woman living in Kircubbin with her father in the 1911 Census. She died on Mar.6, 1954, aged 98 as the above gravestone attests.
Mary Jane Palmer was born about 1866 and is listed in the 1901 census as a 35-year-old unmarried farmer's daughter living with her parents in Kircubbin. She is similarly listed in the 1911 Census. Mary Jane died on Feb.25, 1950, aged 90(?) as the above gravestone attests.
John Palmer married Margaret Martin on Jan.13, 1880, in Ballycopeland Presbyterian Church. They had a daughter

Mary Catherine Palmer was born on Jan.17, 1881, in Portavogie. As an unmarried 20-year-old, she is listed in the 1901 census as living with her grandparents, Adam and Mary Anne Palmer, in Kircubbin. She is similarly listed in the 1911 Census.
Adam Palmer lived on a farm on Warnock's Road, Portavogie. He had a son William Palmer.

Twins Mary Palmer and Rachel Palmer were born on Jan.11, 1819, to John Palmer of Ballyeasborough.

FAMILY OF ADAM PALMER:

Adam Palmer was born about 1796 in Ballyhalbert and emigrated to Scotland where he worked as a gardener and forester. On Nov.4, 1819, in Kirkmaiden, Drummore, Wigtownshire, Scotland he married Susan Main, born Apr.12, 1799, in Kirkmaiden, the daughter of Nathaniel Main (1751-1817) and Elizabeth Hannay (1752-1813). The 1841 census lists Adam and Susan and their children as living at 23 Port Logan Village (a James Palmer is living at 48 Port Logan Village). Adam died on Jan.13, 1864, in Port Logan. Susan is listed in the 1881 census as living alone in Port Logan; she died on Apr.24, 1885. Their children:

John Palmer was born about 1820 in Kirkmaiden and was christened in Sep.1820. His father is listed as Andrew. He must have died young for a later child was named John.
Elizabeth Palmer was born in 1822 and married John Daly on Oct.27, 1843, in Kirkmaiden.
Susan Palmer was born about 1826 and died in 1846 in Port Logan.
James Palmer was born about 1828 in Port Logan. He was convicted of some crime and transported to Australia where he had various occupations as a brewer, gold digger and storekeeper. On Jun.30, 1854, in the Free Church in Geelong he married Mary Jane Wallace, born about 1835 in Cork, Ireland, the daughter of David Wallace and Sarah O'Connell. Mary Jane worked as a servant. James died on Jun.17, 1901, and is buried in the New General Cemetery, Geelong. Mary Jane died on May 9, 1920. Their children:

Louiza Palmer was born about 1853 and died in 1867 at Mt. Duneed.
James Palmer was born about 1855 and died in 1922 in Geelong.
William Palmer was born about 1856 and died in 1944 in Inglewood.
Mary Jane Palmer was born about 1857 and married Henry Francis King Cooling in 1889 in Victoria. Mary Jane died in 1900 in Prahran. Henry and Mary Jane had four children:

Lillian Mary Cooling was born in 1890 in Essendon.
Henry Cooling was born in 1891 in Essendon.
Violet Palmer Cooling was born in 1896 in Prahran.
Montague Henry Cooling was born in 1897 in Prahran.

Susan Palmer was born in 1858 and died the following year in Belmont.
Matilda Ann Palmer was born in 1861 and married Andrew Doherty in 1896 in Mt. Duneed. She died in 1925 in Geelong West.
Henry Palmer was born in 1862.
John William Palmer was born on Apr.2, 1863, in Geelong and became a groom and gardener. On Mar.20, 1884, he married Caroline Williams, born Feb.14, 1863, in Geelong. John died on Nov.9, 1894, at Barwon River, Geelong. Their children:

Albert James Palmer was born in 1885 and died in 1962 in Kensington.
John William Palmer was born Dec.3, 1886, in Geelong and worked as a foreman. He married Jessie Gordon McOuat in Geelong. John died on May 10, 1925, in Corio Bay, Geelong, and Jessie on Sep.26, 1954. Their children:

Phyllis May Palmer was born in Geelong on Jan.30, 1910, and married a man named Groves. She died on Jun.10, 1980, in Geelong.
Mary Winifred Palmer was born in Geelong on Jan.7, 1912.
Elizabeth Irene Palmer was born in Geelong on Apr.10, 1913, and died on May 29, 1973.
Albert Maxwell Palmer was born in Geelong on Nov.2, 1914, and married a woman named Betty.
Margaret Edna Palmer was born in Geelong on Nov.21, 1915, and married Richard Sinclair. She died on Jan.21, 1985.
Jessie Lilian Palmer was born in Geelong on Aug.10, 1917, and died there on Nov.4, 1952.
Sheila Jean Palmer was born in Geelong on Apr.20, 1919, and married Les Hadden. She died on Dec.26, 1991.
John Edward Palmer was born in Geelong on Dec.26, 1919, and married Mavis Enid Clissold. He died on Oct.15, 1985.
Charles William Palmer was born in Geelong on Nov.16, 1922, and worked as a laborer. He married Florence Sheila Manjiviona. He died on Sep.12, 1986. His son, Graham Palmer (grahamdavidpalmer@yahoo.com.au) provided extensive information on this branch of the Palmer family.
Pattie Caroline Palmer was born in Geelong on Nov.24, 1924, and married a man named Hayes.

Percy Edward Palmer was born in 1887.
Florence Irene Palmer was born in 1888 and, in 1913, was married in Geelong to Alfred Archibald Hobson. Their children:

Harold Alfred Hobson was born in Geelong in 1914.
Roy Percival Hobson was born in Geelong in 1915.
Charles Rossmore Hobson was born in Geelong in 1917.

Elizabeth Emily Palmer was born about 1890. She married a man named Schreier and died in Geelong in 1956.
Charles Samuel Palmer was born in 1895 and died on May 10, 1925.

Louisa Palmer was born in 1866.
Charles Edward Palmer was born in 1967 and died as an infant.
William Palmer was born in 1869.
Sarah Ann Palmer was born in 1870.
Alfred Palmer was born in 1871 and died in Fitzroy, Victoria, in 1949.
David Palmer was born in 1872 and died as an infant.
Johnathon Palmer was born in 1873 and died in Yallourn, Victoria, in 1948.
Isabel Louisa Palmer was born in 1875 and, in 1898 in Geelong West, was married to Robert George Batten. Isabel died in North Melbourne in 1941. Their children:

Harold George Batten was born in 1899 in Geelong.
Isabel Olive Batten was born in 1903 in Collingwood.
Charles Wallace Batten was born in 1911 in Northcote.

Victoria Palmer was born in 1877 and died in 1880.

Robert Palmer was born about 1830.
Jane Palmer was born about 1832.
John Palmer was born on Feb.8, 1835, in Kirkmaiden and worked as a mason. In the 1891 census he is listed as single, 55 years old and living in Kirkmaiden.
Grace Palmer was born about 1837.
Ann Palmer was born in 1841 and married William Love, a gardener, on Jul.11, 1864, in Kirkmaiden (Ann is listed as a seamstress). According to the 1881 census they had the following family:

John Love was born about 1866 in Govan, Renfrewshire, and is listed in the 1881 census as living with his parents.
James Love was born about 1868 in Kirkmaiden and is listed in the 1881 census as living with his parents.
William Love was born about 1869 in Kirkmaiden and is listed in the 1881 census as living with his parents.
Susan Love was born about 1871 in Govan and is listed in the 1881 census as living with her parents.
Mathew Love was born about 1873 in Kirkmaiden and is listed in the 1881 census as living with his parents.
Maggie J. Love was born about 1874 in Kirkmaiden and is listed in the 1881 census as living with her parents.
Annie Love was born about 1877 in Kircudbright and is listed in the 1881 census as living with her parents.

Adam Palmer was born about 1842.

FAMILY OF JOHN PALMER:

John Palmer was born about 1795 and married Susanna ? born in 1799. John died before 1851 for, in that year, Susanna Palmer, a 52-year-old widow is listed in the census as living in St.Andrews, Ballyeasborough, Co. Down with her children as listed below. The children of John and Susanna Palmer:

Elizabeth Palmer was born in 1828 and is listed in the 1851 Census as having died as a result of an accident in 1848 at the age of 20.
Adam Palmer was born in 1830 and is listed in the 1851 Census as "absent in Scotland".
Mary Ann Palmer was born in 1832 and is listed in the 1851 Census as a 19-year-old living with her widowed mother in St.Andrews, Ballyeasborough, Co. Down.
Susanna Palmer was born in 1834 and is listed in the 1851 Census as a 17-year-old living with her widowed mother in St.Andrews, Ballyeasborough, Co. Down. This may be the Susan Palmer, 28, spinster of Ballyeasborough (father: John Palmer, labourer) who was married on Dec.30, 1850 in the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Glastry to James White, 30, widower, weaver, of Ballyeasborough, parish of Ballyhalbert (father: Samuel White, farmer). This James White must have died prior to 1868 for on Sep.2, 1868, Susan Palmer alias White, 40, widow, of Ballyeasborough (father: John Palmer, labourer) was married in the Registry Office, Newtownards, to Nathaniel Piper, 48, widower, farmer, of Portavogie (father: James Piper, farmer).

FAMILY OF WILLIAM PALMER:

William Palmer was born about 1796 and became a farmer in Ballyeasborough. He married Mary Clingin. Mary died on Jan.9, 1866, aged 72, and William died on Apr.5, 1867, aged 71; their gravestone in the old Ballyhalbert graveyard is in a modern Martin enclosure and reads: ``PALMER. Erected by William Palmer of Ballyeasborough for wife Mary nee Clingin died Jan.9, 1866, age 72 also daughter Margaret Palmer died Feb.4, 1863, age 33 above William died Apr.5, 1867, age 71 also wife Rachel Palmer died Mar.26, 1898, age 63 also daughter Harriet Palmer died Jun.30, 1901, age 23 also daughter Margaret Palmer died Oct.30, 1901, age 36 also daughter Elizabeth died Sep.23, 1886, age 17 also son William died Nov.19, 1908, age 74.'' William and Mary had children:

Mary Palmer was born about 1822 and died on May 2, 1841, aged 19. She is remembered on the gravestone in a modern Martin enclosure in the old Ballyhalbert graveyard that reads: ``PALMER. Erected by William Palmer of Ballyeasborough in memory of daughter Mary Palmer died May 2, 1841, age 19 also 2 infants John and Adam also grandson William Palmer died Feb.8, 1875, age 11 months. ''

Margaret Palmer, born about 1830, died on Feb.4, 1863, aged 33 as the above gravestone attests.
William Palmer was born about 1834 and is known as "William of the Rock". William Palmer, full age, bachelor, farmer, of Ballyeasborough (father: William Palmer, farmer) married Rachel Palmer, full age, spinster, of Ballyeasborough (father: Adam Palmer, farmer) on Jul.1, 1864, in Glastry Meetinghouse. Adam and Eliza Palmer were witnesses. Rachel died on Mar.26, 1898, aged 63, as the above gravestone attests. In the 1901 Census, 64-year-old widowed farmer William Palmer is listed as living in house 56 in Ballyeasborough with his brother-in-law George Palmer (see above), his 2 daughters as listed below, a 30-year-old farm servant, John Hagan, and a 4-year-old "daughter" Mary Jane Palmer. William died on Nov.19, 1908, aged 74, as the above gravestone attests. William and Rachel had children:

Margaret Palmer was born on Apr.6, 1865, in Ballyeasborough. In the 1901 Census, 30-year-old unmarried seamstress Margaret Palmer is listed as living with her father in house 56 in Ballyeasborough. Margaret died on Oct.30, 1901, age 36 as the above gravestone attests.
Elizabeth Palmer was born on Jul.14, 1869, in Ballyeasborough with Mary Carson present and died on Sep.23, 1886, age 17 as the above gravestone attests.
William Palmer was born on Feb.24, 1874, and died on Feb.8, 1875, aged 11 months as the above gravestone attests.
Mary Palmer was born on May 1, 1876, in Ballyeasborough.
Harriet Palmer was born on Mar.24, 1878, in Ballyeasborough. In the 1901 Census, 23-year-old unmarried seamstress Harriet Palmer is listed as living with her father in house 56 in Ballyeasborough. Harriet died on Jun.30, 1901, age 23 as the above gravestone attests.

John Palmer was probably another son of the same William Palmer. John Palmer, of full age, bachelor, farmer, of Ballyeasborough, Ballyhalbert (father: William Palmer, farmer) married Jane Martin, full age, spinster, of the same place (father: William Martin, farmer) on Oct.15, 1849, in the Registry Office, Newtownards. Their children:

James Palmer was born on Feb.19, 1865.
Ellen Palmer was born on Mar.29, 1866.

FAMILY OF ROBERT PALMER:

Robert Palmer was born about 1816. He is probably the 85-year-old retired and widowed fisherman who is recorded in the 1901 Census as living in the house of James Glover on Shore Row, Kircubbin. James Glover was his son-in-law. Robert had at least three children:

Andrew Palmer was born about 1838, the son of Robert Palmer, laborer, according to Andrew's marriage certificate. On Jun.2, 1860, in Newtownards Registry Office, Andrew Palmer, a 22-year-old bachelor labourer of Ballyesborough (father: Robert Palmer, labourer) was married to Esther McCliment, 21, spinster, of Ballyesborough (father: Robert McCliment, labourer). On their children's birth registrations Andrew is listed as a laborer and her surname prior to marriage is given as McClermont or McClement. He is listed in the 1901 Census as a 60-year-old farmer living in Ballyeasborough, Ballyhalbert, with his 57-year-old wife, Esther, an embroiderer and sewer. Also listed are their four daughters listed below and a 4-year-old grandson, Albert Palmer. Andrew is buried in Ballyeasborough Graveyard where his gravestone reads: ``PALMER. Erected by Andrew Palmer Ballyeasborough for his son Adam died Jan.27, 1891, age 21. Also above Andrew died Apr.9, 1914, age 76.'' Andrew and Esther's children:

Adam Palmer was born on Oct.11, 1868, in Ballyeasborough with Eliza Palmer present. He died in 1891 aged 21 as the above gravestone attests.
Esther Palmer, born in 1872, is listed in the 1901 Census as a 29-year-old unmarried dressmaker living with her parents in Ballyeasborough.
Sarah Palmer was born on May 1, 1875, in Ballyeasborough and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 26-year-old unmarried embroiderer and sewer living with her parents in Ballyeasborough.
Rachel Palmer, born in 1878, is listed in the 1901 Census as a 23-year-old unmarried embroiderer and sewer living with her parents in Ballyeasborough.
Isabella Palmer, born in 1881, is listed in the 1901 Census as a 20-year-old unmarried embroiderer and sewer living with her parents in Ballyeasborough.

Mary Palmer, full age, spinster, sewer, of Ballyeasborough (father: Robert Palmer, shoemaker) was married on Apr.22, 1864, in the Parish Church of Ballyhalbert to James Glover, full age, bachelor, schoolmaster, of Ballyeasborough (father: John Glover, farmer). James was born in 1845. They are associated with Portaferry and Ballyphilip. Mary died prior to 1911 for, in the census of that year, James Glover is listed as a 66-year-old widowed teacher living on Shore Road, Kircubbin, with three of his children as indicated below. Their children:

Mary Jane Glover was born in 1870.
Robert John Glover was also born in 1870.
James Glover was born in 1872 and is listed in the 1911 Census as a 39-year-old single teacher living with his father on Shore Road, Kircubbin.
Ruth Glover was born in 1878 and is listed in the 1911 Census as a 33-year-old single teacher living with her father on Shore Road, Kircubbin.
Sarah Glover was born in 1883 and is listed in the 1911 Census as a 28-year-old single woman living with her father on Shore Road, Kircubbin.

Robert Palmer was probably another son. He was married to Margaret Harper in Portaferry Presbyterian Church on Oct.6, 1869. They lived in Kircubbin for a while when Robert worked as a shoemaker. Later they moved to Ballyeasborough and Robert worked as a fisherman and a shoemaker. They had at least 5 children:

Robert John Palmer was born in Kircubbin on Aug.29, 1868, with Sarah Jane Harper present. He married Ellen (Nellie) Filson, the daughter of James and Mary Filson, in Ballywalter Second Presbyterian Church on Nov.29, 1906. Robert John died on Jul.15, 1942, and Ellen on Jul.17, 1966, aged 91; they are buried in Kircubbin graveyard where their headstone reads:FILSON. Erected by James Filson, Balligan for his mother Margaret alias Cumming who died 1st May 1840 age 48. Also daughter Elizabeth Cummin Filson who died 25 Oct. 1867 age 3 1/2 yrs. Also son John Cummin Filson who died 12 Nov. 1867 age 1yr 8mths. Also his father John Filson who died 6th June 1872 age 76. Robert James Filson Cumming of Balligan who died at Boston U.S. on 16 Oct. 1903 age 22yrs & 6mths. Mary beloved wife of James Filson, Balligan died 21 March 1906 age 70yrs. Also above James died 22 May 1919 age 83. Also ROBERT JOHN PALMER son-in-law of the above James Filson who died 15 July 1942 age 73. Also his wife Ellen Palmer nee Filson died 17 July 1966 age 91yrs. Their son:

Robert John Palmer was married to Alice Finlay. Robert John died on May 23, 1941, and Alice on May 15, 1986; they are buried in Kircubbin Presbyterian graveyard where they are listed on a headstone: ``FINLAY. Erected by James Finlay in loving memory of his son Francis who died Aug.23, 1909, aged 22 years. His daughter Agnes who died Apr.2, 1911(?) aged 38 years. Also the above James Finlay who died Jun.22, 1922, aged 74 years. Also his wife Alice Finlay who died Jul.6, 1928, aged 79 years. Inscribed by Alice R. Palmer in memory of her husband Robert J. Palmer died May 23, 1941. Also the above Alice Ross Palmer died May 15, 1986.'' Their children:

Andrew Palmer was born on Jan.1, 1874, and married Abigail Milligan in Ballyhalbert Parish Church on Nov.8, 1901. Andrew died Jan.31, 1969, aged 94 and Abigail on Oct.31, 1963, aged 78; they are buried in Ballyeasborough Church of Ireland graveyard. Their children:

Isobel Coffey was born on Mar.31, 1939, in Ballyeasborough, the daughter of Eva and Sam Coffey. She married William James Taggart of Greyabbey. They lived in Ballyeasborough before they bought the Mermaid Hotel in Kircubbin. Isobel and Robert had a son

Sarah Jane Palmer who was always known as Jean, was born on Jun.12, 1909, in Ballyeasborough. She emigrated to Canada in 1928 on board the ``Montclare'' of the Canadian Pacific, landing at St.John, New Brunswick. In 1929, she married John Lambie, born Nov.24, 1906, in Dundonald, Troon, Scotland, the son of Gavin Lambie and Margaret Boon. John emigrated to Toronto, Canada, in 1912 aboard the "Lusitania" accompanied by his mother and siblings Mary, Margaret and David. He was a barber and a fire chief with the Windsor Fire Department, given the nickname "Hap". He also was a singer and songwriter with a band and a recording label. Sarah Jane died in Windsor on Jun.19, 1970, and John died in Windsor in Oct. 1987. Sarah Jane and John Lambie had children:

Grace Lambie was born on Oct.3, 1929, in Windsor and married Roy Sawchuk on Apr.21, 1951, in Windsor. Grace was born with holes in her heart and became an artist. She died during corrective surgery in Toronto on Feb.5, 1957, at the age of 29. They had a son:

Laura Franks was born on Mar.20, 1962, and married Terry D. Davies. Their children: Bryn M.F. Davies and Rhys A.F. Davies.

John Andrew Lambie, born on Jun.11, 1936, in Windsor and married Lydia Strelchuk in Mar. 1961. They had a daughter Grace Ann Lambie, born Jul.11, 1966, who has a son Kyle Scott Lambie, born Jun.29, 1996. John and Lydia were divorced and John married Suzanne Sawicki; they have a son John Ellet Lambie.
Mary Jean Lambie was born Dec. 30, 1941 in Windsor and married Thomas George Hosie on May 6, 1961. They had four children: Kimberly Lynne Hosie, Kelly Jean Hosie, Andrew Russel Hosie and Leanna Margaret Hosie. Mary Jean and Thomas were divorced in 1988 and she married William Keown Campaigne. Kimberly Lynne Hosie met Robert McGibbon and had Brett T. Hosie, born Jun.19, 1981. She then met Anthony Rutenberg and had Brayden M. Rutenberg, born Aug.5, 1999.
Kelly Jean Hosie met Marcus Johnathan Patrick Kelly, who was born Feb. 8, 1962 in Bilston, England and they married in 1992 and moved to Charlotte, Tennessee, USA.
Andrew Russell Hosie met Charlene Reeves and had Tielor Andrew Reeves on Oct.2, 1988. Andrew married Zsofia Karaly Jun.16, 2007 in Hungary. Zsofia was born Mar.1, 1969 in Budapest, Hungary. Zsofia has a daughter, Kinga Karaly born Oct.22, 2004.

Colleen Patricia Lambie, born Sep.20, 1947, in Windsor and married William John Saunders on Oct.22, 1966. He died on Nov.20, 1987. They had children Michael John Saunders and Tracy Lynne Saunders (born Jun.24,1967). Tracy died on Oct.23, 1993.

Hugh Palmer was born in the early 1800s and married Margaret Otterson sometime before Sep. 1830. Margaret was the daughter of John Otterson and was baptized in Millisle Presbyterian Church. In the early 1830s Hugh, Margaret, and their son Alexander as well as Margaret's father John and his children emigrated to the US and sometime between 1831 and 1833 settled in Allegheny City which is now part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Hugh and Margaret's son:

Robert Palmer, according to the 1901 Census, was born in 1861 and became a seaman. On Jun.28, 1884, in the Newtownards Registry Office he married Agnes Adair, born in 1861. They had many children according to the 1901 Census:

Hugh Palmer was born in 1887.
Jeaney Palmer was born in 1895.

FAMILY OF JAMES PALMER:

James Palmer, born about 1859, was a carpenter and farmer in Cloughey and married Eliza Jane Robinson in the Newtownards Registry Office on Jul.2, 1879. Eliza Jane was the daughter of Hugh Robinson as witness the gravestone inscription below. James emigrated to the US, arriving in New York on Apr.15, 1899, aboard the ``State of Nebraska'' from Londonderry; he is listed as a 40-year-old married carpenter from Kirkiston bound for Chicago and his cousin David O'Brien. His wife Eliza Jane followed him but not until later for the 1901 Census records Eliza Jane Palmer, a seamstress, as living in Kirkiston, County Down with her father, Hugh Robinson (a retired mariner), and her children, as listed below. Indeed James appears to have returned to the Ards peninsula for the 1911 Census of Cloughey lists him as a 52-year-old engine driver living in Cloughey with his 52-year-old wife, Eliza Jane, their daughters Edith and Helen and their son James (see below). Whatever their travels the family ended up in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. Eliza Jane died there on Jun.11, 1929, aged 72; James died in New York on Oct.23, 1936, and was interred in Tunkhannock, USA. James erected a headstone in Cloughey Presbyterian Graveyard, County Down, which reads: ``ROBINSON. Erected by James Palmer for Hugh Robinson, Kirkistown. Hugh Robinson died Dec.13, 1908, aged 87. His son Hugh, 9 months. Daughter, Matilda, Feb.24, 1921, aged 28. Wife Eliza Jane Robinson died Jun.11, 1929, aged 72 at Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. Above named James died Oct.23, 1936, at New York, USA, interred Tunkhannock, USA.'' The children of James and Eliza Jane Palmer:

Sarah Currie Palmer
Sarah Currie Palmer, born about 1880 in Portaferry, was probably a daughter of James and Eliza. She achieved some reknown as an evangelist both in the USA and in Northern Ireland; her story is briefly told in ``Portavogie - A History'' by James Moore. A fisherman's daughter, she started on a secretarial career but, at age 19, became a born-again Christian and began preaching in England and Ireland. In 1912, she emigrated to the USA, leaving Londonderry on the ``Columbia'' and arriving in New York on Aug.25, 1912. In the records, she is listed as a 32-year-old single missionary from Belfast (daughter of James Palmer) bound for the Moody Institute on La Salle Avenue, Chicago. There she embarked on Bible studies. She must have returned home for a visit the following summer for she re-entered the US in New York on Sep.19, 1913, sailing on the ``Cedric'' from Liverpool. Again she is listed as a 32-year-old single evangelist, the daughter of James Palmer of Cloughey, Portaferry, and bound for the Moody Training Institute in Chicago. This time she was accompanied by her sister Anna B. Palmer. For years she travelled North America preaching the gospel even going as far north as Alaska. She became a US citizen on Jan.3, 1918, in a Cook County Courtroom. She also made visits home during which she preached in Portavogie. One re-entry to the USA occured on Oct.23, 1920, in New York when she sailed on the ``Mauretania'' from Southhampton. Still single she was, by then, on the staff at the Moody Institute and gave her address as 830 N. La Salle Street, Chicago. She also wrote a number of spiritual books that were published by the Moody Institute including ``Dad Hall; Bishop of Wall Street''and ``Vera Dickson's Triumph''. Her last visit home was in 1947 and she spent her last days with her sister Helen McMedan in New York. After she died on Aug.30, 1959, her obituary appeared in the New York Times.

Anna Bella Palmer is listed in the 1901 Census as living in Kirkiston with her mother. In 1913, she travelled to the USA with her older sister, Sarah, arriving in New York on Sep.19, 1913, on board the ``Cedric'' from Liverpool. The records list her as a 22-year-old single governess going to the Moddy Training College in Chicago.
Matilda Palmer was born about 1892 and is listed in the 1901 Census as living in Kirkiston with her mother. She died on Feb.24, 1921, aged 28 as the above headstone records.
Edith Palmer was born about 1895 and is listed in the 1901 Census as living in Kirkiston with her mother. She is also listed in the 1911 Cloughey census as a 16-year-old living in Cloughey with her father and mother.
Janey C. Palmer is listed in the 1901 Census as living in Kirkiston with her mother.
James Palmer was born about 1898 and is listed in the 1911 Cloughey census as an 13-year-old living in Cloughey with his father and mother.
Helen Palmer was born about 1900 and is listed in the 1901 Census as living in Kirkiston with her mother. She is also listed in the 1911 Cloughey census as an 11-year-old living in Cloughey with her father and mother.

FAMILY OF ADAM PALMER:

Adam Palmer was born about 1804. On Nov.28, 1836, in the Glastry Meetinghouse Adam Palmer of Portavogie was married to Lucy Martin of Kirkiston (born Jul.26, 1772, daughter of William Martin); the witnesses were Adam Palmer and Mrs Hughes. Adam died on Apr.22, 1870, aged 66. His will, signed on Apr.18, 1870, was probated to Lucy Palmer of Portavogie, widow, one of the executors, and on her death to his son Adam Palmer, reserving the rights of brother Robert Palmer. Witnesses to the will were Francis Brandon and John Donnan. In the 1901 Census, 88-year-old Lucinda Palmer is listed as living in house 130 in Portavogie with her daughter, Ann Hughes, and her family. Lucy died on Mar.24, 1909, aged 95. James and Lucy are buried in Ballyhalbert Old Graveyard where their gravestone reads: Erected by Lucy Palmer, Portavogie, in memory of her beloved husband Adam Palmer, departed this life 22nd April 1870 aged 66 years. Also the above named Lucy Palmer who died 24th March 1909 aged 95 years. Adam and Lucy were the parents of:

Eleanor Palmer, known as Ellen, was born in Portavogie on Dec.23, 1839, and christened in the Glastry Meetinghouse. On Jan.27, 1858, in the Glastry Meetinghouse Ellen Palmer, 18, spinster of Portavogie (father: Adam Palmer, farmer) was married to Samuel Mahood, 21, bachelor carpenter of Portavogie (father: William Mahood, farmer). The witnesses were Hugh Martin and Lucy Martin.
James Palmer was born in Portavogie on Feb.2, 1842, and christened in Glastry Meetinghouse. On Jan.12, 1866, in the Glastry Meetinghouse, James Palmer, a full-age, bachelor, shopkeeper of Portavogie whose father was farmer Adam Palmer was married to Lucy Martin (number 2) of Ballyeasborough (father, William Martin, farmer). Mary Martin was a witness. James became a grocer with a store in front of the harbour in Portavogie; it also served as a ship's chandlery. He and Lucy are listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as a 57-year-old shopkeeper and farmer and his 42-year-old wife (must be older!) living at house 131, Portavogie, with their sons, Adam, James and Robert, a 21-year-old servant Mary Johnstone and their 1-year-old grandson James Mahood. In the 1911 Census, 70-year-old James and 74-year-old Lucy are living in house 32 in Portavogie with their sons Adam and James and their grandson James Mahood. James Palmer is remembered as ``of Greyabbey'' since his birth was registered there. James died on May 22, 1925, aged 81 and Lucy died on Aug.3, 1929, aged 93; they are buried in Glastry graveyard. In addition to those listed below, the gravestone inscription includes a granddaughter Louisa who died on Oct.7, 1925 aged 11 years. The children of James and Lucy Palmer:

Adam Palmer was born on Aug.12, 1868, in Portavogie and is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as a 32-year-old farmer living with his parents. In the 1911 Census 43-year-old unmarried Adam is living in house 32, Portavogie, with his parents. Adam married a woman named Ellen. Adam died on Oct.19, 1950, aged 82 and Ellen died on Mar.6, 1955, aged 84; they are buried in Glastry graveyard.
Elizabeth Palmer was born on Jun.8, 1871, in Portavogie with Ann Palmer present. Elizabeth married William Mahood in the Glastry Presbyterian Church on Sep.23, 1895. They are the parents of the grandson in the census mentioned above. The children of William and Elizabeth Mahood:

James Mahood is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as a 1-year-old living with his grandparents, James and Lucy Palmer. In the 1911 Census, 12-year-old James Mahood is still living with his parents in house 32 in Portavogie. James Mahood took over the running of the store in front of the harbour in Portavogie from his grandfather. On Feb.9, 1921, James Palmer Mahood was married to Isabella Jane McDonnell in Portaferry Presbyterian Church. After Isabella died James married a widow Alexander. James and Isabella Mahood had a son:

James Mahood followed his father as the owner of the store and married a woman named May. He died about 2003. His children:

Louisa Mahood married twice and lived and died in Australia. Her second husband was a man from Carowdore whom she met in Australia. Her ashes were brought home and scattered on the Green Isle off Portavogie, a little island off the harbour that can be reached when the tide goes out.

James Palmer was born on Dec.13, 1872, in Portavogie and is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as a 28-year-old farmer living with his parents. In the 1911 Census 39-year-old unmarried James is living in house 32, Portavogie, with his parents. James had a farm in Portavogie and married Elizabeth [Lily] Cavan (born about 1884, the daughter of William and Isabella Cavan of Kearney, Co. Down). The farm was at the junction of Main Street between Pypers Hill/Warnocks Road where his son and four daughters grew up. Paul Armstrong, grandson of daughter Elizabeth Palmer, has very fond memories as a child, of long summer holidays spent on the farm in Portavogie. He remembers the farm house (which is now derelict) run by daughter Anne Palmer who lived there until the early 1990's. Paul Armstrong (psdarmstrong@gmail.com) provided the details on this family. Elizabeth [Lily] died on Sep.14, 1947, aged 63 and James died on Aug.17, 1949, aged 77. They are buried in the Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast, where their gravestone reads "PALMER. In loving memory of our dear son William who died 25th April 1942 aged 26 yrs. Also my dear wife Elizabeth [Lily] who died 14th September 1947 aged 63 Yrs. Also James husband of above who died 17th Aug. 1949 aged 77 yrs. Also their daughters Isobel Mahood who died 14th Aug. 2002 aged 81 yrs. Also Ann Palmer who died 1st. Aug. 2003 aged 86 yrs." William Palmer was born about 1916, died on Apr.25, 1942, aged 26 and is buried in the Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast, as remembered in the above gravestone inscription.
Ann Palmer was born in 1921. Paul Armstrong remembers her as quite a character, a spinster who had been a sergeant major in the British Army and had been based in Singapore and Malaysia. Ann returned to Portavogie to rent the old family farmhouse. Ann died on Aug.1, 2003, aged 86 and is buried in the Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast, as remembered in the above gravestone inscription.
Elizabeth Palmer, known as Betty, was born in 1923 and may have been the twin of Ann. She was unmarried but gave birth to a daughter, June Palmer, in June 1944. The father was a US military man stationed at a USAF base near Portavogie during WWII. He was either killed in action or re-stationed elsewhere; whatever the case there was never any contact with him. Elizabeth moved to London, leaving June to be brought up by her aunt Lucy Palmer in Orangefield, East Belfast. Elizabeth died in 2007. Elizabeth's daughter:

June Palmer, born in Jun. 1944, was brought up by her aunt Lucy Palmer in Portavogie. She married David Armstrong in Belfast in 1972 and they had a son, Paul Armstrong (psdarmstrong@gmail.com), who provided the details on this family.

Lucy Palmer was born in 1925. Lucy was a spinster who lived in Orangefield East, Belfast. She was a keen bowls and cricket player who represented Northern Ireland at bowls. Lucy died in 2007.
Isabel Palmer was born in 1928. Isabel married William Mahood; they lived in Dundonald, East Belfast, and had 4 sons Ian, Derek, Michael, and James Mahood. Isabel died on Aug.14, 2002, aged 81 and is buried in the Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast, as remembered in the above gravestone inscription.

John Hughes was born about 1895 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 6-year-old schoolboy living with his mother and grandmother in house 130 in Portavogie.

Adam Palmer was born in Portavogie on Oct.7, 1850, and christened in Glastry Meetinghouse. Adam married Maggie Ennis. In the 1901 Census 50-year-old farmer Adam Palmer and his 43-year-old wife Maggie are listed as living in house 7 in Ratallagh (Ardkeen, Co.Down) with their 4 children listed below and a 21-year-old servant, Hugh Kelly. This was known locally as Palmer's Hill, Portavogie. In the 1911 Census 60-year-old farmer Adam Palmer and his 52-year-old wife Maggie are listed as living in house 11 in Ratallagh (Ardkeen, Co.Down) with 3 of their children as listed below. The children of Adam and Maggie Palmer:

Elizabeth Palmer was born in 1890 and is listed in the 1901 Census as an 11-year-old schoolgirl living with her parents. In the 1911 Census she is listed as a 21-year-old unmarried dressmaker living with her parents.
Lucy Palmer was born in 1891 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 10-year-old schoolgirl living with her parents.
Florence Palmer was born in 1893 and is listed in the 1901 Census as an 8-year-old schoolgirl living with her parents. In the 1911 Census she is listed as an 18-year-old unmarried farmer's daughter living with her parents. She married David Clint. Their children:

William Clint married Iris Robinson, the daughter of Samuel Robinson and Maggie Palmer. William was both a farmer and a carpenter who worked in the Mahood shipyard (see Chapter 6).

May Bella Palmer was born in 1894 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 7-year-old schoolgirl living with her parents. In the 1911 Census she is listed as an 17-year-old unmarried farmer's daughter living with her parents. She married Samuel Clint, the brother of her sister's husband.

FAMILY OF DAVID PALMER:

David Palmer was born in 1856 and married Jane Palmer, born 1850, in Millisle Presbyterian Church on Dec.9, 1881. They are listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as a 46-year-old fisherman and a 50-year-old embroider living with their children Mary, James, William John, Ann Jane and David. They are also listed in the 1911 Census of Portavogie as a 55-year-old labourer and his 61-year-old wife living with their children, James and Ann Jane as well as visitors Samuel Mahood and William Mahood McClement. Their married daughter, Mary Keag McClement, lives next door. David died on Apr.2, 1914, aged 57 and Jane on Jan.10, 1921; they are buried in Glastry graveyard. Their children:

Mary Keag Palmer was born in Ballyeasborough on Sep.25, 1882, and was christened in Millisle Presbyterian Church. She is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as a 18-year-old embroiderer living with her parents. Mary married twice. On Mar.4, 1907, Mary married John McClement in the Glastry Meetinghouse and they are listed in the 1911 Census of Portavogie as a 31-year-old sailor and his 28-year-old wife living with their daughters Jane Palmer McClement (aged 1) and Nancy McClement (aged 4 months) along with John's brother William McClement (44-year-old draper) and a nephew and two neices of John's. John must have died for Mary married a second time to George Gowan, born about 1894. Their deaths are recorded on a headstone in Ballyhalbert graveyard that reads: ``GOWAN ... Also their son George Gowan who died Sep.13, 1950 aged 56 years. ... Also Mary widow of George Gowan died Mar.31, 1969, age 87 years.'' Mary's children:

Jane Palmer McClement, daughter of Mary and John McClement, was born in 1910 and is listed in the 1911 Census of Portavogie as living with her parents.
Nancy McClement, daughter of Mary and John McClement, was born in 1911 and is listed in the 1911 Census of Portavogie as living with her parents.
William Gowan, the son of Mary and George Gowan, was born about 1927 and married a woman named Margaret. William died in the Princess Victoria disaster on Jan.31, 1953, when that Larne-Stranraer ferry sank near the Copeland Islands. The above headstone also reads: ``GOWAN ... Inscribed by Margaret Gowan in memory of her husband William, lost on board the Princess Victoria, Jan.31, 1953, aged 26 yrs.''

Ann Jane Palmer was born in 1883 and is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as a 18-year-old embroiderer living with her parents. She is also listed in the 1911 Census of Portavogie as a 22-year-old embroiderer living with her parents. On Jun.10, 1914, she married Andrew S. Cavan (born about 1889, the son of William and Isabella Cavan of Kearney, Co.Down) in Glastry meetinghouse.
James Palmer was born in Ballyeasborough on May 16, 1884, and was christened in Millisle Presbyterian Church. He is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as a 17-year-old tailor living with his parents. He is also listed in the 1911 Census of Portavogie as a 26-year-old tailor living with his parents. He married a woman named Nan. James died on Jul.19, 1959, aged 74 and Nan on May 14, 1987, aged 84; they are buried in Glastry graveyard. James and Nan had at least one son.
William John Palmer was born in Ballyeasborough on Jul.13, 1886, and was christened in Millisle Presbyterian Church. He is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as a 14-year-old carpenter living with his parents. This may be the William John Palmer who married Margaret Ambrose in Second Presbyterian Church, Newtownards, on Feb.26, 1918. If so they had no children but raised a nephew called Clint Mawhinney.
David Palmer was born in Ballyeasborough on May 4, 1891, and was christened in Millisle Presbyterian Church. He is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as a 9-year-old living with his parents. David died on Aug.5, 1901, aged 10 and is buried in Glastry graveyard.

FAMILY OF JOHN PALMER (THE ``SUNBEAM PALMERS''):

John Palmer of Portavogie was born about 1853 and maybe the brother of Elizabeth Palmer who married Robert John Palmer (see Chapter 6). On Dec.31, 1877, in Glastry Meetinghouse John Palmer married Mary Anne Piper. They are listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as 48 and 47 years old respectively. In the 1911 Census they are listed as a 65-year-old carpenter and his 57-year-old wife living on the Main Road, Portavogie with their daughter, Mary, and their grandson, John Taylor. John Palmer died on Oct.15, 1930, aged 84 and Mary on Jul.17, 1941, aged 87; they are buried in Glastry graveyard where their gravestone reads: ``PALMER. Erected by John Palmer of Portavogie for his son Adam died Jan.31, 1909, age 23. Above John died Oct.15, 1930, age 84 yrs. Wife Mary died Jul.17, 1941, age 87. Daughter Agnes Taylor died Mar.25, 1948. Son John died in Auckland NZ on Mar.11, 1949. Mary Elizabeth died Mar.10, 1952, age 74. Wife of William, Jane died Sep.25, 1999, age 96 yrs''. Their children:

Agnes Palmer is registered as being born on Apr.11, 1880, in Portavogie, the daughter of John Palmer, a carpenter, and Mary (Piper). She married Thomas Taylor on Jul.15, 1902, in the Glastry meeting house. Agnes died on Mar.25, 1948, and is buried in Glastry graveyard as the above gravestone attests. They had at least one child:

John Taylor was born about 1907 and is listed in the 1911 Census as a 4-year-old living on Main Road, Portavogie, with his grandparents John and Mary Palmer.

Ellen Palmer was born about 1883 and is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as an 18-year-old farmer living with her parents.
Adam Palmer was born about 1886 and is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as an 15-year-old farmer living with his parents. Adam Palmer, 21-year-old single carpenter from Portavogie (born in Kircubbin) arrived in New York on Nov.23, 1906, aboard the ``Cedric'' from Liverpool. He was bound for his brother William Palmer, 5530 May Street, Chicago. Adam died on Jan.31, 1909, aged 23 and is buried in Glastry graveyard as the above gravestone attests.
William Piper Palmer was born about 1887 and is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as an 14-year-old living with his parents. William emigrated to the US and as a 25-year-old single engineer from Portavogie arrived in New York on Apr.11, 1908, aboard the ``Baltic'' from Liverpool. He was bound for his brother Adam Palmer, 5530 May Street, Chicago. In Chicago he worked in a steel mill and married Francis E. Wilson whose mother was Jane Savage (born Sep.28, 1851, in Portaferry) and whose father was William Wilson (born May 10, 1849, in Glastry). Their first address was in Calumet City. Then they bought a home at 13829 S. Wabash Avenue, Riverdale, Illinois. They had 2 children listed below. Francis died in an awful train accident in Sep. 1948. A few years later in 1950 or 1951 William returned to Northern Ireland and lived with Addie and Deborah Taylor at 5 Edgecumbe Park, city?, until he bought a home at 2 Gloucester Avenue, Donaghadee. He married Jane (or Jean) Palmer from Donaghadee. William died on Aug.25, 1958, aged 74 and Jane on Sep.25, 1999, aged 96; they are buried in Glastry graveyard. William's children:

Evelyn Violet Palmer was born on Dec.19, 1910, and married Harry Herman Volkmar on Jul.30 in the early 1930s. They had a daughter:

HarLyn Jean Palmer Volkmar was born on Dec.30, 1941, and grew up in Riverdale, Illinois. She married a man named Mlynek.

Wilson Palmer

Mary Elizabeth Palmer was born about 1888. She did not marry but ran a boarding house called ``Sunbeam'' on the Main Road in Portavogie. Agnes Palmer Young (Chapter 6) lived beside the boarding house when she returned to Portavogie; Agnes used to help Mary while Mary would make sure Agnes ate well. Mary said that she was related to Taylors; also that her mother, Margaret or Mary, was a cousin of Agnes's grandfather, James Palmer. Mary died on Mar.10, 1952, aged 64, and is buried in Glastry graveyard.
John Palmer was born about 1893 and is listed in the 1901 Census of Portavogie as an 8-year-old living with his parents. John died in Auckland, New Zealand, on Mar.11, 1949.

FAMILY OF WILLIAM PALMER:

William Palmer, full age, bachelor, labourer, of Dunover, parish of Ballywalter (father: William Palmer, weaver) was married to Mary Anne Skilling, 18, spinster, sewer, of same place (father: Alexander Skilling, weaver) on Mar.6, 1854, in the Parish Church of Ballywalter. Robert Bell and William Brannen were witnesses. William and Mary Anne had children:

Francis Palmer was born Jun.23, 1869.
Jane Skillen Palmer was born Jul.22, 1871.
