MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS
The following were found in various miscellaneous records:
- A list of land grants in the precinct of Liffer, barony of Raphoe, County Donegal, dated 1608, in the notes on leases and tenants in Hill's "Plantation of Ulster" grantees and/or in Pynnar's 1618 Survey of the above land grants the following appear. In the precinct of Porlough (appointed to Scottish Undertakers), James Cunningham with a lease of 1,000 acres called Moyegh, granted a lease in the quarter called Playter or Plaister to John Fyeff.
- A list of leases in County Donegal given to early English and Scottish settlers includes, for a area known as The Laggan, a lease to John Fyieff in the townland of Plaister from Sir John Cunningham, dated Nov.1, 1614.
- The Arms Muster Roll for Strabane, Parish of Donagheady, includes under the Manor of Derrygoon on Oct.9, 1745: John Fyffe with one gun good and William Fyffe with two guns very good.
- A list of the tenants of the Baronscourt Estate of the Marquis of Abercorn in 1745 includes William Fyffe of Derrygoon.
- Records in the Abercorn Papers (AP) all begin with the number D623 and are then divided into 4 sections (A, B, C and D). Section A mainly contains letters, B deeds, leases and land purchases, C account books and D estate maps and valuations. The AP contain many documents pertaining to the Duke of Abercorn’s other lands in Ireland and Scotland. Four pertinent documents, which suggest that Matthew's father may have been John Fyffe, are:
- D623/D/1/13 is a survey of part of Derrygoon manor ca. 1756. In Lower Archill John Fife has 38 acres, 2 roods, and 16 perches.
- D623/D/1/16 and 19 Valuations of Manor of Derrygoon 1777 in Archill, Matthew Fife 37 acres, 1 rood, and 20 perches (This is likely same land held by John in 1756).
- D623/C/4/7 pg. 1-7 A Rental of the Manor of Derrywoon as let for the term of twenty one years from November 1787 in Archill, Matthew Fife and James Fife (likely brothers) are sharing rent.
- D623/C/4/7 pg 58 a + b "Rent account book for the Manor of Derrygoon 1794 -1809" shows the following people paying rents: Archill Matthew Fife 37 acres 1 rood 20 perches; under his name it says Matw Fife new lease 1808-1811.
- The Spinning Wheel Bounty List for Ardstraw Parish in 1796 includes William Fife (Fyffe) with four wheels.
- The Spinning Wheel Bounty List for Urney Parish in 1796 includes John Fyffe with two wheels.
- The Tithe Applotment Book for Drumragh Parish in 1830 includes David Fyffe of Creevangar, Alexander Fyffe and Samuel Fyffe of Drumragh Caldwell.
- The Tithe Applotment Book for Ardstraw Parish in 1833 includes David Fyffe of Derrygoon, John Fyffe of Derrygoon, J. Fyffe of Archill, M. Fyffe of Archill, James Fyffe of Breen and James Fyffe of Erganagh.
- The rentals in the manor of Cloghogal (Abercorn Estate) in 1848 include James Fyffe in Castletown.
- James Fyffe is listed in the Hamilton Rent Books of 1849/50 for the Manor of Strabane, Co. Tyrone, as renting land in Brownhill.
- The Griffith Valuation for Leckpatrick Parish in 1858 includes James Fyffe in the Abercorn Estate.
- John J. Fyffe, Matthew Fyffe and William Fyffe are listed among the pewholders in the Second Ardstraw Presbyterian Church (Drumlegagh), Ardstraw Parish, in 1862.
- James Fyffe is listed among the pewholders in the Second Strabane Presbyterian Church, Leckpatrick Parish, in 1862.
- Sarah Fyffe is listed among the pewholders in the Sion Mills Presbyterian Church in 1868.
- A list of landowners in Co.Tyrone in 1876 includes James Fyffe of Coolcrunaght, Castlederg, with 4 acres and William Fyffe of Coolcrunaght, Castlederg, with 4 acres.
- Strabane: The late Capt. W H Fyffe was initiated into St. John’s Lodge 334 Omagh as a young officer on leave from France during the First World War and joined the family law practice and was appointed Crown Solicitor. In 1969 the Capt. W H Fyffe Golf Trophy, in the form of a beautiful inscribed silver salver was presented; to be played for annually by Brethren from Tyrone & Fermanagh and a "shield" open to any Mason.
- Strabane: William Samuel Fyffe, journalist, son of Wilson Fyffe, was born in Strabane, 1914. He was educated at a local secondary school and Chairman of the North West Cricket Union. He served as an Ulster Unionist member for North Tyrone from the general election of 1969 until the prorogation of the Parliament in 1972. William Samuel Fyffe, born 1914, died 5 April 1989.
- Strabane, 1919: Under the heading ‘Residents’ - Wilson Fyffe, Reporter and Law Clerk.
- According to First World War Archives, Attestation Paper No. 1250729. John James Fyffe, unmarried farmer, of Castletown, Tyrone, born 31 Oct 1888, joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Regina on 16 Feb 1917, while living in Lumsden, Saskatchewan, Canada with his sister Mrs. Maggie Fulton (That John James is Jane Fyffe's brother is confirmed by the marriage record of their sister Maggie to William Marshal Fulton; apparently John James took a few years off his age to get into the army -Note also that Janey is mistakenly listed as Fanney under 'Birth Section' probably as a result of transcription error).
- Belfast News-Letter, Apr.30, 1870: Mention of a change of venue from Fermanagh to Tyrone in a legal case in which a female named Fyffe was induced to enter into marriage by duress of threats. The defendant husband, a man named Hamilton, was the son of the proprietor of the "Enniskillen Advertizer".
- Belfast News-Letter, Feb.15, 1872: Announcement of the death on Feb.10, 1872, at Upper Sackville Street, Dublin, of Jane Fyffe, widow of the late James Fyffe, Clunty, Baronscourt, Co. Tyrone.
- Belfast News-Letter, Jun.24, 1872: The Omagh Quarter Sessions heard the case in James Daly sued John Fyffe (both reside near Omagh) for alleged assault and battery. Daly had lent a vice to a man named Crawford who then sold his property including the vice to Fyffe. Daly showed up to claim his vice whereupon Fyffe forceably evicted him from the property, allegedly causing the injury. The injuries were found to be less than claimed and a four pounds was awarded to Daly.
- Belfast News-Letter, Oct.12, 1875: William Fyffe is a member of the Grand Jury at the Omagh Quarter Sessions.
- Belfast News-Letter, Apr.10, 1876: George Fyffe of Arva, County Cavan, helps run a Landed Estates Auction.
- Belfast News-Letter, Jul.28, 1876: William Fyffe is a member of the Grand Jury at the Omagh Assizes.
- Belfast News-Letter, Oct.14, 1881: Andrew W. Fyffe is listed as having passed the June 1881 First Examination in Medicine at the Queens University of Belfast.
- Belfast News-Letter, Jul.14, 1882: Rev.W.Fyffe, Comber, is mentioned in an account of the July 12 celebrations.
- Belfast News-Letter, May 1, 1884: Description of a legal case involving the will of a deceased farmer, Samuel Fyffe, who died at Ardchichan near the town of Donegal. The plaintiffs, his widow Essy Fyffe and sister-in-law Araminta Erskine, claimed Samuel made a will leaving his farm to them. The defendant Samuel Henderson, a nephew of Fyffe, said this will was revoked by the deceased because he had been persecuted to make it by his wife and sister-in-law. The matter was settled when a deal was reached.
- Belfast News-Letter, Oct.17, 1888: At the Lurgan Petty Sessions, a man was sent to prison for assaulting the police, including Constable Fyffe.
- Belfast News-Letter, Sep.20, 1890: In Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh, William and Thomas Fyffe of Shanaghy are appointed to a board opposing taxation to be levied by the Lough Erne Drainage Board.
- Belfast News-Letter, May 7, 1891: At the Enniskillen Quarter Sessions, Alexander Fyffe is a member of the Grand Jury.
- Belfast News-Letter, Jan.3, 1893: Samuel Fyffe is listed as one of the Omagh Town Commissioners.
- Belfast News-Letter, Apr.18, 1893: William Fyffe is a member of the Grand Jury at the Omagh Crown Sessions.
- Belfast News-Letter, Apr.21, 1896: In a legal case at the Omagh Petty Sessions the shop of White & Fyffe, Market Street, Omagh is mentioned.
- Belfast News-Letter, Oct.16, 1897: Essie Fyffe and Lizzie Creighton announce the auction of their residence and farmland at Ardchicken, County Donegal.
- Belfast News-Letter, Nov.18, 1898: At Newtownstewart Petty Sessions, Samuel Fyffe was fined for having trespassed on the estate of the Duke of Abercorn in pursuit of game.
- Belfast News-Letter, Mar.7, 1893: James Fyffe is listed as one of the Omagh Town Commissioners.
U.S. IMMIGRATION RECORDS
The following are found in the records of immigration to New York:
- George Fyffe, single 29-year-old chaffeur, and his sisters Maggie Fyffe, 19-year-old single servant, and Essie Fyffe, 17-year-old single servant, from Fermanagh arrived in New York on Sep.29, 1907, on board the "Caledonia" from Londonderry. He had previously been in the US for 9.5 years, but they are new immigrants. They are bound for Philadelphia where he is returning to Wm. Thomson, 1920 S. Beechwood St, Philadelphia.
- George Fyffe, single 30-year-old chaffeur (father: Thomas Fyffe, Clonnelly, Ireland) arrived in New York on Sep.5, 1908, on board the "Lucania" from Liverpool. He has been in the USA since 1897 and is bound for home, 600 Church Lane, Philadelphia.
- Andrew Fyffe, single 18-year-old from Fermanagh arrived in New York on Sep.29, 1907, on board the "Caledonia" from Londonderry.
- Thomas Fyffe, married 29-year-old farmer from Tyrone arrived in New York on May 3, 1909, on board the "California" from Londonderry. His nearest relative is McGahey, Brigh, Fermanagh, and he is bound for his uncle, William Fyffe, 330 Congress Street, Troy, New York.
- Mary Fyffe, 51, and her daughter, Sarah Fyffe, 1, from Kilskerry(?), Ireland, arrive in New York on May 29, 1910, on board the "Caledonia" from Londonderry. They are going to join Mary's husband Thomas Fyffe, 1 Havermans Avenue, Troy, New York. They are detained one day and leave by rail for Troy the next day.
- Minnie Fyffe, single 19-year-old dressmaker from Ballinamallard, Fermanagh, arrived in New York on Sep.21, 1914, on board the "Cameronia" from Londonderry. She is headed for Minnie Davidson, 7738 Lowe Avenue, Chicago.
- George Fyffe, single 33-year-old farmer (father: Alexander Fyffe, Pigwood, Pettigo, Fermanagh) arrived in New York on Aug.31, 1913, on board the "Caledonia" from Londonderry. His last place of residence was Pettigo and he is going to a friend, Thomas Johnston, 742 S. Cleveland Avenue, Philadelphia.
- George Fyffe, single 43-year-old minister (mother: Mrs. Fyffe, Pigwood, Pettigo, Fermanagh) arrived in New York on Aug.25, 1924, on board the "Adriatic" from Londonderry. He has been in the US since 1913 (in Georgia) and is bound for his friend Thomas Johnston, 5548 Osage Avenue, Philadelphia.
- Joseph Fyffe, 38-year-old store clerk (last residence Mountjoy, Ireland, brother Mr. Fyffe of Doogary, Omagh, Ireland), and his wife Margaret Fyffe, 40 (born in Tully, Omagh, Ireland) arrived in New York on May 11, 1921, on board the "Olympic" from Southhampton. They are accompanied by their children, William (14), Anna (9), Mabel (8) and Joseph (6), all of whom were born in the USA. Joseph and Margaret previous lived in Oakland, California during 1901-1919. They list a friend T.Logan, Alvarado, California, and say they are bound for San Francisco.
- William Fyffe, 28-year-old chaffeur (father: William Fyffe, 12 High Street, Belfast) and his wife Emily Fyffe, 25, (father Beefr. Whirter, 4 Summer Hill, Warrenpoint) arrived in New York on Apr.8, 1921, on board the "Carmania" from Liverpool. They are headed to Emily's brother, James Whirter, 1306 S. 25th Street, Omaha, Nebraska.
- George Thomas Fyffe married Elizabeth McGuire, daughter of Terrance McGuire. She was born about 1839, and died on Mar.4, 1925 in Biddeford, ME. She emigrated from Ireland as a widow about 1890. The children of George and Elizabeth Fyffe:

Sproule Fyffe who died in the same place the 5th day following.
