CHAPTER 9

THE WOODBURN FAMILY

Our ancestor, Mary Anne Woodburn, came from the townland of Ballintemple, parish of Errigal, County Londonderry, according to the certificate of her 1861 marriage in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church, County Londonderry. On the marriage certificate she is described as of full age, a spinster of Ballintemple whose father is Matthew Woodburn, a farmer. Ballintemple is a townland about 2 miles due west of Garvagh, County Londonderry. A Woodburn family lived in Ballintemple before the famous seige of Derry in 1689. This is Mary Anne Woodburn's family.

  1. William Woodburn was born about 1730 and married Mary ? The children of William and Mary Woodburn:
    1. Alexander Woodburn was born in 1747 and died in 1771, aged 24. Alexander bought a farm near Macfin in County Antrim. All his children emigrated to the US. He is buried in Ballintemple graveyard.
    2. James Woodburn was born on Nov.12, 1748, in Edenburne, Desertoghill, County Londonderry. He emigrated in Jul., 1767 to Newcastle, Durham, Ontario, Canada, and married a widow, Sarah (McGill) McMurray on Nov.16, 1775. Sarah was born in County Down in Nov. 1746; her first husband was William McMurray with whom she had 5 children by the age of about 29. James and Sarah moved south to North Carolina in 1777, then to Kingstree, South Carolina in 1782, to Ogeechee, Georgia, in 1783, to Orangeberg County, South Carolina, in 1789, then to Summerseat, Georgia. Finally they settled among the Rockey Creek Irish in Rocky Creek, South Carolina. James died on Aug.21, 1812, and is buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Chester, South Carolina; Sarah died on Jul.31, 1815, aged 69. The children of James and Sarah Woodburn:
      1. Elizabeth Woodburn was born in Pennsylvania on May 4, 1777. She married Thomas Craig on Sep.29, 1801, and they lived in Alabama.
      2. Margaret Woodburn was born in North Carolina on Sep.17, 1779. She married Matthew Johnson on Oct.24, 1808.
      3. Dorrance Woodburn was born in Jan., 1782, and died as an infant in Ogeechee, Georgia, on May 26, 1784.
      4. Jean Woodburn was born in Georgia on Jun.4, 1784, and died in Edisto, Aiken, South Carolina, in Mar. 1789.
      5. Dorrance Beatty Woodburn was born in Summerseat, near Louisville, Georgia, on Aug.16, 1786, and, on Dec.3, 1807, married Rachel Johnston, born on Nov.4, 1788. Dorrance enlisted and served two and a half years in the war of 1812. In 1823 or before Dorrance began to have qualms of conscience about his membership in a church that supported the institution of slavery. As a result he prepared a paper entitled "Slavery in South Carolina" and joined a church, the Reformed Presbyterian Church, who admitted no slave owners. Rachel died on May 7, 1848, and Dorrance died on Oct.21, 1856, near Bloomington, Indiana. The children of Dorrance and Rachel Woodburn:
        1. John Johnston Woodburn was born in Chester District on Sep.29, 1808. He married Rosanna Harbison on Jul.18, 1837. She died on Aug. 25, 1867. They had one son, Thomas Craig Woodburn, who was born Nov.3, 1839.
        2. Sarah McGill Woodburn was born in Chester District on Sep.23, 1810, and died in 1891 aged 81.
        3. Cynthia Woodburn was born in Chester District on Oct.6, 1812, and died Nov. 27, 1868, aged 56.
        4. Eliza Ann Woodburn was born in Chester District on Jan.21, 1815, and died on Dec.26, 1862, aged 47.
        5. James Woodburn was born in Chester District on Jan.21, 1815. James married Martha Jane Hemphill, daughter of James K. Hemphill (born in Chester District on Dec.7, 1827) on Apr.16, 1846. The Hemphill family had moved to Indiana in 1832 from Chester District, South Carolina. James Woodburn died on Sep.8, 1885, aged 47. The children of James and Martha Woodburn:
          1. Laura Adelaide Woodburn was born on Jan. 15, 1847, and died in Benson, Minn., in Oct. 1920, aged 73.
          2. Walter Emmett Woodburn was born on Feb. 7, 1849, and died in Bloomington on May 6, 1906, aged 57.
          3. Theophilus Wylie Woodburn was born on Feb. 11, 1852, and died in Benson, Minn., on Jul. 12, 1912, aged 60.
          4. Ida Lizzie Woodburn was born on Oct. 21, 1854, and died in Monmouth, Ill., on Jun.30, 1927, aged 72.
          5. James Albert Woodburn was born on Nov. 30, 1856.
          6. Grace Helena Woodburn was born Oct. 23, 1864; died Feb. 27, 1922, aged 57.
        6. William Woodburn was born on Mar.21, 1820, and died on Jun.13, 1858, aged 38. The fifth to die in a family of eleven, within ten years, William was the head of the household after his father's death in 1856. William Woodburn by his will, dated April 7, 1858, left all his property to his four sisters. Witnessed by T. A. Wylie, and W.S. Stormont.
        7. Margaret Woodburn was born on Jan.30, 1823, and died on Jan.6, 1862, aged 39.
        8. Matthew Walker Woodburn was born on Jan.21, 1825, and died on Jan.17, 1855, aged 29.
        9. Mary Lucinda Woodburn was born on Nov.6, 1828, and died on May 31, 1854, aged 26. She married William Crowe in the fall of 1850 and went to Princeton, Ind., with her husband. She returned to Bloomington in 1852. William Crowe was killed by an automobile on Jul.28, 1923. They had one child, Louise Evelyn Crowe.
    3. Matthew Woodburn was born in 1755 and, in 1783 in County Londonderry, married Isabella Gilmour, born in 1760 and died in 1846. Matthew lived in Ballintemple, County Londonderry and died there in 1830. The children Of Matthew and Isabella (Gilmour) Woodburn:
      1. William Woodburn was born in Ballintemple on Jan.14, 1785. He was living there in 1796. In 1859, aged 74, he was living in the Parish of Errigal, County Londonderry.
      2. John Woodburn was born in Ballintemple on May 2, 1788, and married Mary Witherow. He lived in Gortfad and in Desertoghil, County Londonderry, and died in 1878. John and Mary Woodburn had one child:
        1. John Woodburn was living in Ballintemple in 1825.
      3. Mary Woodburn was born in Errigal Parish on Jan.11, 1791. On Mar.12, 1810, in First Garvagh Presbyterian Church, she married John Wilson, born in 1778. John died on Aug.6, 1851, Mary died on Apr.2, 1865. A gravestone in the Desertoghill Parish Burying Ground records: "Sacred to the memory of John Wilson of Ballyagan who died on the 6th August 1851 aged 73? years. His wife Mary died on the 2nd April 1865 aged 74 years. And his daughter-in-law Nancy on the 14th Feby 1854 aged 33 years. Also his son William who died 10th March 1875 aged 62 years. Also his daughter-in-law Margt Ann died 27th August 1893 aged 68 years. The children of John and Mary Wilson:
        1. William Wilson was born in 1812 and died on Mar.10, 1873.
        2. Isabella Wilson was born in 1815 and died on Feb.4, 1868.
      4. Robert Woodburn was born on Feb.4, 1793, in the parish of Errigal, County Londonderry. On Oct.21, 1822, in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church he married Sarah Dripps, born in 1798 the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Dripps.
      5. Matthew Woodburn was born on May 11, 1795, in Ballintemple, parish of Errigal, County Londonderry. In 1818 he was living in Gortafad and on Mar.4, 1823, in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church he married Isabella Dripps, born in 1796 in Liscall, parish of Errigal, the daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Dripps, and baptized in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church on Jun.30, 1800. Matthew and Isabella Woodburn lived in Ballintemple until his death in 1883 at aged 88. Isabella died in 1888. The children of Matthew and Isabella (Dripps) Woodburn:
        1. George Woodburn was born in 1823 in Liscall, parish of Errigal, County Londonderry. On Jun.24, 1856, George Woodburn (single, father Matthew Woodburn) and Mary Smyth (single, father James Smyth) were married in Aghadowey Presbyterian Church, parish of Aghadowey, County Londonderry. In the 1901 Census 75-year-old retired grocer George Woodburn (Presbyterian, born in County Derry) and his 62-year-old wife Mary are living at house# 75 in Ballyfinaghy, Malone, Belfast, County Antrim, with two of their children (as indicated below) and two of their grandchildren, Hilda and Olga Woodburn. George Woodburn died on Apr.13, 1907. At that time, he was living in the Belfast suburb of Balmoral at Banna Cottage which may be the same as the Ballyfinaghy, Malone, address of the 1901 Census. In his will he leaves his estate to his wife Mary, one pound each to his sons James, George and William and five pounds to his son Matthew of Derry; he also leaves gifts to his daughters Bella, Minnie, Annie and Martha. George is buried in the First Garvagh Presbyterian Church graveyard where he erected a gravestone that reads: "Erected by George Woodburn of Garvagh in memory of his daughter Mary, died 15th May 1868 aged 2 years. His son Robert, died 22nd Nov. 1894 aged 18. Also the above George Woodburn died 13th Apr. 1907 aged 84 years. "Peace, Perfect Peace". Also his wife Mary died 12th May 1910. "He giveth his beloved sleep". Matthew Woodburn died 13th June 1936 aged 68 years. Lila Woodburn died 4th Dec. 1979 aged 100 years. Mary E.B. Woodburn died 10th March 1970 aged 57 years.". As this states, Mary died on May 12, 1910. The children of George and Mary Woodburn:
          1. James Woodburn is mentioned in his father's will.
          2. Isabella Woodburn was born in 1861 in Garvagh, County Londonderry. On Jul.14, 1887, in St. Thomas' Church of Ireland, Lisburn Road, Belfast, she married Richard McCorry, born in 1853, the son of Richard McCorry and Eliza (McKinstry). In the 1901 Census they are listed as living in House #86, Ballyfinaghy, Malone, Belfast, and in the 1911 Census at 4 Nottinghill, County Antrim. Isabella is mentioned in her father's will. She died on Apr.9, 1947, in Belfast; Richard died in 1926. Richard and Isabella McCorry had children:
            1. Maude McCorry was born in 1890.
            2. Richard McCorry was born in 1892.
          3. Annie Jane Woodburn was born in 1867 in Garvagh, County Londonderry. She is listed in the 1911 Census as living in Ballyvelton Upper, Knockantern, County Londonderry. Annie is mentioned in her father's will.
          4. Martha Elizabeth Woodburn was born on Apr.27, 1861, the daughter of George Woodburn and Mary, and was baptized on Feb.3, 1862, in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church, County Londonderry. Martha is listed in the 1901 Census as a 36-year-old living with her parents in house# 75 in Ballyfinaghy, Malone, Belfast. In the 1911 Census she is listed as living in Ballyvelton Upper, Knockantern, County Londonderry.
          5. George Woodburn, son of George Woodburn and Mary, was born on Mar.17, 1864, in Garvagh, County Londonderry, and was baptized on Apr.24, 1864, in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church, County Londonderry.
          6. Mary Woodburn, daughter of George Woodburn and Mary (Smyth), was born on Apr.26, 1866, in Garvagh, County Londonderry, and, as the above gravestone inscription states, died on May 15, 1868, aged 2 years.
          7. Matthew Woodburn, son of George Woodburn and Mary (Smyth), was born on Mar.30, 1868, in Garvagh, County Londonderry. This is possibly the Matthew Woodburn who is listed in the 1901 Census as a 24-year-old bookkeeper (Presbyterian, born in County Antrim?) who is a boarder in the home of Thomas Nelson, house #4, Irish Street, Strabane, County Tyrone. He is the Matthew of Derry referred to in his father's will. Matthew married Lila Buchanan on Sep.10, 1902, in Donagheady Second Presbyterian Church, Strabane; prior to her marriage Lila, according to the 1901 Census, was 20-year-old Presbyterian dressmaker (born in County Tyrone) living as a boarder in the home of publican Margaret Maxwell on Main Street, Strabane. In the 1911 Census 40-year-old timber clerk Matthew Woodburn (Presbyterian, born in County Derry) and his 31-year-old wife Lila Woodburn (married 9 years, Presbyterian, born in County Tyrone) were living in house #55, Beechwood Avenue, Londonderry, with their two children indicated below. Matthew Woodburn of 76 (formerly 55) Beechwood Avenue, Londonderry, a retired manager died on Jun.13, 1936, at the age of 68 at Clarendon Nursing Home, Londonderry, leaving his estate to his wife Lila Woodburn. Lila died on Dec.4, 1979, at the age of 100. Both Matthew and Lila are buried in the graveyard of First Garvagh Presbyterian Church in Garvagh and are remembered in the above mentioned gravestone inscription. The children of Matthew and Lila Woodburn:
            1. Hilda Woodburn was born about 1894 in County Antrim. In the 1901 Census she is listed as a 7-year-old living in House #75, Ballyfinaghy, Malone, Belfast, with her grandparents, George and Mary Woodburn. In the 1911 Census she is listed as a 17-year-old millinery apprentice living with a family member in Lonsdale Broad Road, Sale, Cheshire, England.
            2. Olga Woodburn was born about 1897 in County Antrim. In the 1901 Census she is listed as a 4-year-old living in House #75, Ballyfinaghy, Malone, Belfast, with her grandparents, George and Mary Woodburn. In the 1911 Census she is listed as a 14-year-old schoolgirl living with a family member in Lonsdale Broad Road, Sale, Cheshire, England.
            3. George Buchanan Woodburn was born on Jul.21, 1903, in Strabane, County Tyrone and is listed in the 1911 Census as a 7-year-old living with his parents in Londonderry. George married Mary (Molly) McDaid in Belfast in 1928 and they immediately emigrated to the Chicago area in 1928. They lived in Chicago for many years and had three children there. In the 1930 US Census he is listed as living in Chicago where he probably worked in the automobile industry. George and Molly retired to Florida and both are buried there. George died on Feb.19, 1985, in Broward County, Florida. George and Mary had three children:
              1. Mary Elizabeth Woodburn, known as Betty, was born in Chicago and married Bill Hagan. Bill predeceased Betty who died in Florida in Dec.2011.
              2. Bridget Woodburn was born in Chicago and married an American Army officer James Ryan.
              3. Sean Woodburn was born in Chicago but died unmarried before middle age.
            4. Robert Woodburn was born about 1904 in Strabane, County Tyrone and is listed in the 1911 Census as a 6-year-old living with his parents in Londonderry. Robert Woodburn, 17, single, motor mechanic, arrived in New York on Oct.16, 1921, aboard the "Cameronia" from Londonderry. His father is Matthew Woodburn of 55 Beechwood Avenue, Londonderry. He is travelling with his aunt Martha B. Calvin (43, married) who is a US citizen and is returning home to 50 North Michigan Avenue, Pasadena, California. Martha was the sister of Robert's mother, Lila Buchanan. This may be the Martha Buchanan who, according to the 1901 Census was a 23-year-old Presbyterian running a cycle shop in Omagh, County Tyrone. She married Hugh Lyle Calvin on Apr.28, 1909, in Los Angeles County, California. Acoording to both the 1910 and 1920 Censuses they were living in Pasadena, California.
          8. Mary Woodburn, daughter of George Woodburn and Mary (Smith) was born on Jun.5, 1870, in Garvagh, County Londonderry, and was baptized on Aug.21, 1870, in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church, County Londonderry. "Minnie" is listed in the 1901 Census as a 28-year-old living with her parents in house# 75 in Ballyfinaghy, Malone, Belfast.
          9. William Woodburn, son of George Woodburn and Mary (Smith) was born on Mar.30, 1873, in Garvagh, County Londonderry, and was baptized on May 17, 1873, in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church, County Londonderry. In the 1911 Census he is listed as a 38-year-old living in Ballyvelton Upper, Knockantern, County Londonderry.
          10. Robert Woodburn was born in Sep. 1875, the son of George and Mary Woodburn, and was baptized on Nov.28, 1875, in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church, County Londonderry. Robert died aged 18 on Nov.22, 1894, in Garvagh and is buried in the First Garvagh Presbyterian Church graveyard as the above gravestone inscription attests.
        2. Matthew Wood Woodburn was born in 1825 in the parish of Errigal and was baptized on Aug.1, 1825, in the Garvagh First Presbyterian Church. On 22 Mar.22, 1860, Matthew Woodburn (father Matthew Woodburn) and Bella Brown (19, born in 1841, father William Brown) were married in Terrace Row Third Presbyterian Church, parish of Coleraine, County Londonderry. Bella (or Isabella) must have died prior to 1901 for in the 1901 Census Matthew Wood Woodburn is listed as a 73-year-old widowed grocer (Presbyterian, born in County Derry) living in house #5, Railway Place, Coleraine, County Londonderry, with his daughter Agnes, son Alexander, nephew Alan Roger Wyle, a boarder, Elizabeth B. Moore, and a servant, William McCormick. The Wills calendars record the death on Jan.26, 1903, of Matthew Wood Woodburn, a retired grocer of Railway Place, Coleraine, County Londonderry, probate being granted to his daughter, Agnes W. Brewster. The children of Matthew and Isabella Woodburn:
          1. Barbara Wylie Woodburn was born in Coleraine, County Londonderry, and married James Robinson in Sep.1889.
          2. Robert Riley Woodburn was born on Jun.3, 1861, in Garvagh, County Londonderry. On Dec.8, 1887, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, he married Martha Young, born in 1866, the daughter of Hugh Young and Martha Wilson. Robert died in Allison Park, Pennsylvania, on Aug.26, 1933. Martha died in 1940.
          3. Isabella Browne Woodburne was born on Nov.23, 1864, in North Brook, Coleraine, County Londonderry. On Dec.28, 1897, John Browne Scott (born in 1866) and Bella Browne Woodburn were married in Terrace Row Third Presbyterian Church, parish of Coleraine, County Londonderry. In the 1901 Census they are listed as living at #2 Waterside, Coleraine, and in the 1911 Census they are living at #6 Ballymoney Road, Ballymena. The children of John and Isabella Scott:
            1. Winifred Isabel Scott was born in 1899.
            2. Dorothy Brown Scott was born in 1903.
          4. Matthew Wood Woodburn was born on 25 Mar.25, 1866, in Coleraine, County Londonderry, and emigrated to the USA. On Aug.18, 1887, in Cuyahoga Falls, Summit, Ohio, he was married to Lena Blanche Ober, born on Sep.22, 1868, in Geauga County, Ohio, to George Ober and Martha (Matthews). In the 1910 Census, they are listed as living in Cleveland, Ohio; in the 1920 and 1930 Censuses they are living in Columbia County, Florida, where Matthew is involved in the nursery business for pecans. Matthew died on Feb.20, 1931, in Lake City, Columbia, Florida and is buried in the Oak Lawn Cemetery. Lena died in 1959.
          5. Agnes Wilson Woodburn was born in Coleraine on Aug.30, 1867. In the 1901 Census she is listed as a 30-year-old unmarried housekeeper (Presbyterian, born in County Derry) living in house #5, Railway Place, Coleraine, County Londonderry, with her father. On Nov.17, 1902, Abram Hutcheson Brewster (born in 1880) and Agnes Wilson Woodburn were married in Coleraine Civil Registrars Office, parish of Coleraine, County Londonderry. In the 1911 Census they are living at #13 Railway Place, Coleraine. In Nov. 1921, Agnes sailed alone from Liverpool to New York aboard the "Scythia" arriving in New york on Nov.8, 1921. She intended to stay with her brother Alexander Woodburn of 108 Willard Courts, Washington, DC, for one year. Agnes and Abram Brewster had one child:
            1. Woodburn Brewster was born in Coleraine in 1904 and is listed in the 1911 Census as a 7-year-old living with his parents at #13 Railway Place, Coleraine. On Mar.24, 1928, Woodburn sailed from Londonderry aboard the "Cameronia" arriving in New York on Apr.3, 1928. In 1930, 1932, 1933 and 1937 he was living in Stamford or Norwalk, Connecticut. Woodburn married a woman named Sarah (born in 1903 in Holywood, County Down) who had emigrated to USA, leaving Belfast on Nov.27, 1937, aboard the "Scythia" and arriving in New York on Dec.6, 1937. Woodburn and Sarah Brewster had two daughters and a son.
          6. Julia Woodburn was born on Apr.26, 1869, in County Londonderry and married Joseph Wylie, born in 1852. They had two children:
            1. Isabella Jane Wylie was born in Stranraer, Scotland, on Oct.23, 1895.
            2. Joseph Allan Rodger Wylie was born in Stranraer, Scotland, on May 10, 1897. In the 1901 Census he is listed as 3-year-old Alan Roger Wylie, born in "Wistonsbari N B" (writing very indistinct = may mean New Brunswick) and living in Coleraine with his grandfather.
          7. William Brown Woodburn was born on Feb.15, 1871, in Coleraine, County Londonderry, an emigrated to the USA. On Aug.17, 1897, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he married Catharine Jackson Cavanaugh, born on Jun.3, 1873, in Winona, Minnesota, the daughter of Charles Joseph Cavanaugh and his wife Mary Henley (Jackson). In the 1910 Census they are listed as living in Ward 7, Chicago. William died in Chicago on Dec.3, 1911, and is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery. Catharine died on May 27, 1944, in Norwich, Chenango, New York. William and Catharine Woodburn had children:
            1. Barbara Jean Woodburn was born in 1899 and is listed in the 1910 Census as living in Chicago with her parents.
            2. William D. Woodburn was born in 1900 and is listed in the 1910 Census as living in Chicago with his parents.
          8. Jannette Woodburn was born on May 31, 1872, in Coleraine, County Derry. In the 1901 Census she is listed as a National School teacher living at 16 Atlantic Avenue, Belfast.
          9. Alexander Woodburn was born on May 30, 1873, in Coleraine, County Derry. In the 1901 Census he is listed as a 27-year-old unmarried grocer (Presbyterian, born in County Derry) living in house #5, Railway Place, Coleraine, County Londonderry, with his father. He emigrated to the USA and in 1921 was living at 108 Willard Courts, Washington, DC.
          10. Mary Leslie Woodburn was born on Dec.31, 1881, in Coleraine, County Derry.
        3. Isabella Woodburn was born in 1828 in Gornamoygh, County Derry, and was baptized in the First Garvagh Presbyterian Church on Nov.20, 1828.
        4. Elizabeth Woodburn was born in 1834 in Gornamoygh, County Derry, and was baptized in the First Garvagh Presbyterian Church on Jun.26, 1834. On Sep.28, 1858, in Macosquin, County Derry, she was married to John Brown, son of William Brown. They had three sons
          1. John Brown was born on Mar.11, 1865.
          2. Matthew Woodburn Brown was born on Jul.8, 1867.
          3. William Thomas Brown was born on Jan.4, 1870.
        5. Mary Anne Woodburn, our ancestor, was born in 1836 in Ballintemple, County Derry. Her story is told in a previous chapter.
        6. Ellin Woodburn was born in 1840 in Ballintemple, County Derry, and was baptized in the First Garvagh Presbyterian Church on Jan.12, 1841.
      6. James Woodburn was born in Feb. 1798, in Errigal Parish, County Londonderry, and in 1818 is listed as a 20-year-old living at Gortfad, Errigal Parish. In 1825 he is living in Ballintemple and similarly in 1859.
      7. George Woodburn of Ballintemple was born on Mar.1, 1802, in Errigal Parish, County Londonderry, and in 1818 is listed as a 16-year-old living in Gortfad. On Jun.30, 1836, George Woodburn and Jane Gilmore were married in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church, parish of Errigal, County Londonderry. Jane was born in 1819. In 1840 and 1859 they are living in Ballintemple. The Wills calendars record the death on Jul.3, 1891, of George Woodburn of Ballintemple, County Londonderry. In his will, George makes provisions for his wife Jane and directs his son William to take care of her. He also leaves a sum to his three daughters, Isabella, Anne and Mary Jane, and to his grandson George Woodburn, M.A., of Maghera, and to his son George Alexander Woodburn of Thurles, County Tipperary. He leaves his farm to his son William Woodburn. Since George died prior to the 1901 Census Jane Woodburn is listed in that census as an 82-year-old widow and retired farmer (Presbyterian, born in County Derry) living in house #8 in Ballintemple with her son William and a servant, Martha Campbell. The children of George and Jane Woodburn:
        1. George Alexander Woodburn, born about 1840, settled in Thurles, County Tipperary. He was left a very small sum in his father's will.

        5. Mathew Woodburn was born on Mar.3, 1841, in Garvagh, County Derry, and on Mar.24, 1841, was baptized in Garvagh First Presbyterian Church. About 1860 he married Elizabeth Barclay (born in 1842 in Maghera, County Derry) and became a Presbyterian minister (in Bushmills, Portrush, and/or Maghera?). He was the eighth minister of Ballywillan Presbyterian Church, Portrush. Mathew Woodburn of Ballywillen, County Londonderry, Presbyterian Minister, died on Nov.28, 1877, and was buried in the Ballywillan Old Graveyard, Portrush. His will grants administration to James Barkley of Maghera, woollen draper, presumably Elizabeth's brother. Elizabeth Woodburn "late of Maghera, County Londonderry, Widow," died Mar.29, 1885; the administration of her estate was also granted to James Barkley of Maghera, Merchant, the curator of the minor children.           1. Annie Barkley Woodburn was born on Aug.8, 1865, in Bushmills, County Antrim. She died in 1948.
          2. George Woodburn was born on Sep.9, 1867, in the Islandmore Manse, Portrush, County Antrim. Married in 1893. In the 1901 Census, 33- year-old George Woodburn and his 39-year-old wife Elizabeth (both Presbyterian and born in County Derry) are living in house #2 in College Avenue, Londonderry, with their 3 children indicated below and a servant Bessie Keegan. George is listed as a "Presbyterian Minister M.A., Professor of Logic and English". In the 1911 Census, 43- year-old George Woodburn and his 49-year-old wife Elizabeth are living in the same house in Londonderry, with their 3 children indicated below and a servant Mary O'Donnell. George is listed as a "Minister of the Presbyterian Church MA and Professor of Philosophy in Magee College". Magee College is now part of the University of Ulster. He was a professor at Magee College for 52 years during which time he also served as President. Later George and Elizabeth must have moved to Maghera for they are thus referred to in the will of George Woodburn (-1891). Rev. George Woodburn died on Jun.24, 1947, and is buried in Derry City Cemetery. The children of George and Elizabeth Woodburn:

            2. Sara Mary Woodburn was born about 1895 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 5-year-old (born in County Derry) living with her parents in house #2 in College Avenue, Londonderry. In the 1911 Census she is listed as a 15-year-old schoolgirl (born in County Derry) living with her parents in Londonderry.
            3. Elizabeth Woodburn was born about 1898 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 2-year-old (born in County Derry) living with her parents in house #2 in College Avenue, Londonderry. In the 1911 Census she is listed as a 12-year-old schoolgirl (born in County Derry) living with her parents in Londonderry.
          3. Jane Woodburn was born on Jun.6, 1869, in Portrush, County Antrim. She died in Greenock, Ayrshire, Scotland, on Mar.14, 1909.
          4. Mary Georgina Woodburn was born on Jan.5, 1871, in Portrush, County Antrim. She died on May 31, 1917, in County Antrim.
          5. James Barclay Woodburn was born on Mar.12, 1872, in Portrush, County Antrim. In the 1911 Census, 39-year-old Presbyterian Clergyman James Barclay Woodburn (born in County Derry) and his 38-year-old wife Ada Elizabeth Woodburn (born in Belfast) are listed as living in house #26 in Castlerock, County Londonderry, with their daughter, a servant, Lizzie Callaghan, and a nurse/servant, Sarah Strawbridge. Rev. Dr. James Barkley Woodburn was the author and editor of "The Ulster Scot". Rev. James Woodburn died on Sep.26, 1957, in Belfast. The children of James Barkley and Ada Elizabeth Woodburn:

William is listed in the 1901 Census as a 55-year-old unmarried farmer (Presbyterian, born in County Derry) living in house #8 in Ballintemple with his mother and a servant, Martha Campbell. In the 1911 Census he is listed as an unmarried 65-year-old farmer living alone in house #2 in Ballintemple.
