CHAPTER 6

THE ACHESON AND ANDERSON FAMILY


This chapter delineates the family of Arabella (Anderson) Harris, the husband of William Harris and the mother of Annie Marion Harris who married Samuel Storey Badger. The genealogy begins with Arabella's great-great-great-great-grandfather, William Acheson:

  1. William Acheson was said to be living in Drumcree, County Leitrim, in 1748. He had a son:
    1. Robert Acheson also said to be living in Drumcree, County Leitrim, in 1748. He had a son:
      1. William Robert Acheson was born about 1764 in Drumcree, Drumsna, Co. Leitrim. He married Eleanor ?? (born about 1768) about 1781 in Drumcree, Drumsna, Co.Leitrim. William died on Aug.31, 1857, in Drumcree; Eleanor died in 1848. The children of William Robert and Eleanor Acheson:
        1. James Acheson was born in March, 1782, in Drumcree, Drumsna, Co. Leitrim, He married Mary Berryhill about 1812 in Annaduff, Co. Leitrim. He died on Aug.31, 1877, in Eastersnow, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. The children of James and Mary (Berryhill) Acheson:
          1. Sarah Jane Acheson was born on Nov.9, 1809, in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. On Feb.17, 1828, in Dio Elphin, Estersnow, Co. Roscommon,she was married for the first time to James William Stephenson. Her second marriage was to Lemuel Byers. She died in 1888 in Bernside, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, USA.
          2. Eleanor Acheson was born about 1810 in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She married James Jackson on Jan.14, 1830, in Estersnow, Co. Roscommon.
          3. William Sandy Acheson was born in 1813 in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. He married Jane Notley. He died on Apr.20, 1879, in Lugnashammer, Co. Roscommon. William had at least four children among them:
            1. Elizabeth J. Acheson, known as Lizzie, was born in 1850 in Croghan, Boyle, Co. Roscommon and, on Feb.16, 1871, married her cousin(?) George Acheson (see above), a mill owner, farmer, and corn merchant of Drumcree, County Leitrim. They are listed in the 1901 Census as living in Drumcree with their three children, Annabella, Emily and Albert.
            2. Sarah Acheson married a man named Maguire and had several children including:
              1. Lily Maguire who married a man named Maxwell and had several children including:
                1. Horace Maxwell of New Zealand.
          4. Catherine Acheson was born about 1815 in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She married William Trotter in 1836 in Elphin, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
          5. Robert Acheson was born on Jul.14, 1816, in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. He died in Cavetown on Mar.25, 1928.
          6. Elizabeth Acheson was born on Apr.19, 1818, in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She married twice: first to Hugh Leighton on Feb.13, 1845, in Elphin, Boyle, Co. Roscommon and second to Thomas Notley on Jun.6, 1861, in Annaduff, Co. Leitrim.
          7. Anne Acheson was born on May 30, 1820, in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She married William McCloghry on Dec.14, 1848, in Estersnow, Co. Roscommon. She died on Apr.12, 1863, in Drumderalina, Co. Sligo.
          8. George Acheson was born in 1824 in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. He died on Feb.1, 1849, in Cavetown.
          9. John Acheson was born in 1825 in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
          10. Mary Acheson was born on Sep.30, 1826, in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
          11. Robert Acheson was born in 1831 in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Robert married Sarah Palmer on Nov.24, 1859. He died in Cavetown on Jul.10, 1870.
          12. Marie Acheson was born in 1832 in Cavetown, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She married Duncan Campbell on Oct.23, 1851, in Estersnow, Co. Roscommon.
        2. Sarah Acheson was born about 1784 in Drumcree, Drumsna, Co. Leitrim.

        3. George Acheson was born in 1789 in Drumcree, Drumsna, Co. Leitrim. He emigrated to Cherry Tree, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, USA and married Margaret McClellan in 1827 in Pennsylvania. George died on Apr.8, 1877, in Cherry Tree, Pennsylvania. Children of George and Margaret Acheson:
          1. Eleanor Acheson, the eldest child, was born in Pennsylvania about 1822. She married Joseph Lovelace on Jan.4, 1844, in Clearfield County, PA. She died on Mar.11, 1855, in Washington Creek, Douglas County, Kansas. Their eldest child
            1. George Atchison Lovelace was born on Oct.2, 1844, in Clearfield County, PA, and married Margaret Jane Farnsworth about 1871. George died on May 3, 1912, in Gallitzen Borough, PA. Some of the children of George and Margaret:
              1. Twins Mary Lovelace and Joseph Lovelace who died young.
              2. Alfred Clinton Lovelace was born on Feb.7, 1874, in Cherryhill Township, Indiana County, PA. He married Anna Belle Nicewonger on Dec.31, 1885, in Indiana County, PA. Alfred died on Jun.27, 1940, in Cuyahoga Falls, Summit County, Ohio.
              3. Eva Lovelace was born about 1878 in Pennsylvania. She died on Aug.23, 1889, in Diamondville, Indiana County, PA.
              4. Bertha Lovelace was born on Mar.22, 1882, in El Paso County, Colorado. She married James Daniel Turner on Jan.31, 1901, in Clearfield County, PA. Bertha died on Mar.11, 1904, in Addison, Somerset County, PA.
              5. Fremont Lovelace was born on Oct.3, 1887, in Heilwood, Indiana County, PA. He first married Ida Emily Lord on Nov.28, 1906, in Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA. As a widower with adult children, he married a widow Harriet (Block) Hensel. Fremont died on Jan.1, 1960, in Santa Barbara, CA.
              6. Margaret Agnes Lovelace was born Jan.5, 1893, in Graceton, Indiana County, PA. She married Hubert George Schneider on Nov.4, 1914, in Huntingdon, Huntingdon County, PA. Margaret died on Oct.31, 1983, in Santa Barbara, CA. Hubert and Margaret were the grandparents of Mary Slavin Waage (marywaage@comcast.net).
          2. William Atchison was born in Pennsylvania on May 15, 1823. He married Mary Gamble. William died on Sep.24, 1898, in DuBois Boro, Clearfield County, PA.
          3. Jane Atchison was born about 1830 in Burnside, Clearfield County, PA. She married Robert McKeague. Jane died on Mar.19, 1883, in PA.
          4. Mary Atchison was born about 1829 in PA. She died on Oct.26, 1859, in Burnside Township, Clearfield County, PA.
          5. Nancy Atchison was born about 1834 in PA. She married William Callon in 1854 in Lumberville, Clearfield County, PA. Nancy died on Jan.11, 1911, in Wausau, Marathon County, WI.

            
          John Acheson  Catherine Anderson

        4. John Acheson was born in 1790 in Drumcree, Drumsna, Co. Leitrim. He married twice. He married Belle ?? in Drumcree about 1817 and they had at least two children listed below. Then, in 1838 in Elphin, County Roscommon, he married his cousin Catherine "Minnie" Anderson, the daughter of John Anderson of Croghan by John Anderson's first wife. John Anderson's children:
          1. Anne Acheson was born in 1818 in Drumcree, Drumsna, Co. Leitrim, the daughter of John Acheson by his first wife, Belle. She married her cousin John Anderson of Croghan. In the 1901 Census, she is listed as an 82-year-old widow living in Croghan with her son George Anderson and her daughters, Madeleine and Mary Anderson. Anne died on Jan.27, 1904, in Croghan, Co. Roscommon. John and Anne Acheson had children:
            1. George Anderson was born about 1845 and became a draper and grocer in County Roscommon. He is reputed to have been a linguist. In the 1901 Census, 56-year-old unmarried George Anderson is living in House number 17, Croghan, County Roscommon, with his 82-year-old mother Anne Anderson, his unmarried sisters Madeleine and Mary and servant Nannie Forde. He died on Jan.13, 1929, in Croghan, County Roscommon.
            2. William Anderson was born in Boyle, County Roscommon in 1847 and became a farmer in Ballymore East, Rushfield, County Roscommon. He married his cousin Lily Acheson (see below), the grand-daughter of Alexander Acheson, born in County Leitrim about 1865. They are listed as a 54-year-old farmer and his 26(must be 36)-year-old wife living in Ballymore East, County Roscommon, with their children, two servants and a visitor, Joseph Poynton. This Anderson family were Brethern. William died in Ballymore on Dec.10, 1908. The children of William and Lily Anderson (these children were the great grand-sons and great grand-daughters of both John and Alexander Acheson):
              1. Annie Anderson was born in Co. Roscommon about 1886 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 15-year-old living with her parents in Ballymore East.
              2. Mary Anderson was born in Co. Roscommon about 1888 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 13-year-old living with her parents in Ballymore East.
              3. Willie Anderson was born in Co. Roscommon about 1897 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 4-year-old living with his parents in Ballymore East.
              4. Ethel Anderson was born in Co. Roscommon about 1900 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 1-year-old living with her parents in Ballymore East. Ethel married her cousin, Captain William Shaw Acheson (see below)
              5. Eveline Anderson was born in Co. Roscommon and is listed in the 1901 Census as living with her parents in Ballymore East.
            3. Margaret Anderson was born in Croghan, Co. Roscommon in 1854 and died on Dec.16, 1915.
            4. Ellen Letitia Anderson was born in Co. Roscommon in 1855.
            5. Madeleine Anderson was born in Co. Roscommon about 1857 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 44-year-old unmarried woman living in Croghan, Co. Roscommon, with her brother George Anderson. She died on Jul.27, 1922, in Croghan, Co. Roscommon.
            6. Mary Anderson was born in Co. Roscommon about 1858 and is listed in the 1901 Census as a 43-year-old unmarried shop assistant living in Croghan, Co. Roscommon, with her brother George Anderson. She died on Feb.27, 1921.
            7. Arthur Fletcher Anderson was born in Co. Roscommon on Oct.24, 1859, in Croghan, County Roscommon. He died on Feb.3, 1932, in Long Beach, California, USA.
            8. Arabella Anderson married William Harris and their family was described in an earlier chapter. The will of Arabella Harris of Longford reads as follows:
              This is the last will of me, Arabella Harris of Longford in the County of Longford. I will and bequeath my interest in the house and premises in which I now reside and carry on(?) business in the town of Longford and all my other personal estate of whatever nature and kind I many died possessed, unto my daughter Annie Harris subject to the payment of all my debts, funeral and testamentary expenses - and I appoint my two brothers George Anderson of Croghan in the County of Roscommon and William Anderson of Ballymore, Boyle, in said County as executors of this my last will and testament - and I hereby revoke all former wills and codicils. Dated this first day of November, 1897. Signed Arabella Harris, Longford, J.A.Thompson, Clerk in Holy Orders, Longford, and Mary Anderson, Croghan. Signed by the testatrix in the joint presence of us who thereupon signed our names in her and each others presence."
          2. Margaret Acheson was born about 1821 in Drumcree, Drumsna, Co. Leitrim, the daughter of John Acheson by his first wife, Belle. She married Thomas Black on May 17, 1841, in Estersnow, Co. Roscommon.
          The children of John Acheson by his second wife, Catherine:
          1. Mary Jane Acheson was born in 1838 in Croghan, Derrylow, Co. Roscommon. On Dec.17, 1856, in Croghan, Killukin, Co. Roscommon, and on Dec.17, 1856, in Croghan, Killukin, Co. Roscommon, she married William Acheson, who was born on Oct.28, 1827, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Co. Sligo. She died in Lough Arrow, Co. Sligo, and he died in 1908 in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Co. Sligo. They had children:
            1. William James Acheson was born about 1858 in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo.
            2. Catherine Margaret Acheson, a twin, was born on Jul.31, 1860, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo, and died about 1887.
            3. Jane Ellen Acheson, a twin, was born on Jun.8, 1862, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Co. Sligo, and died on Mar.25 of the same year.
            4. Robert Alfred Acheson was born on Mar.11, 1864, in Ballyfarnan, Co. Sligo.
            5. Sydney Violet Acheson was born on Jun.23, 1870, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo.
            6. Mary Lou Acheson was born on Jun.23, 1870, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo.
            7. George Fletcher Acheson was born in 1871 in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo. He died about 1951.
            8. Sarah Anne Acheson was born on Mar.18, 1872, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo. She married John MacDonough on Dec.17, 1903, in USA. She died in Sep. 1961.
            9. Agnes Acheson was born on Nov.19, 1873, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo.
            10. Harriet Charlotte Acheson was born on Feb.8, 1875, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo. She died on Aug.27, 1919.
            11. Thomas Alexander Acheson was born on Aug.4, 1876, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo. He married Amelia Jane Chambers. He died on Jul.23, 1952. The children of Thomas Alexander and Amelia Jane Acheson:
              1. James Keith Acheson was born on Jun.2, 1910, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo. He died in 1979.
              2. Charles Henry Acheson was born on Feb.19, 1923, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo. He died about 1950.
            12. Emily Henrietta Acheson was born on Apr.6, 1878, in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo.
            13. William James Acheson was born in 1881 in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo. He died on Jan.20, 1952.
            14. Bertha Acheson was born in 1883 in Rock View, Lough Arrow, Boyle, Co. Sligo. She died on Oct.10, 1923.
          2. George H. Acheson was born on Apr.17, 1842, in Croghan, Killukin Parish, Co. Roscommon. He married Eliza Jane Anderson on Jun.7, 1868, in Westport, Decatur, Indiana, USA. He died on Aug.22, 1880, in Sardinia, Decatur, Indiana, and is buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Jackson Twp, Decatur, Indiana.
          3. Catherine Acheson was born on Sep.25, 1843, in Croghan, Co. Roscommon. She died in New Zealand.
          4. John William Acheson was born in 1844 in Derrylow, Croghan, Co. Roscommon. He married Mary Monson in 1866. He died in 1922 in Learn, Co. Roscommon. The children of John William and Mary Acheson:
            1. George Robert Acheson was born on Apr.26, 1871, in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
            2. John Acheson was born on Oct.28, 1867, in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
            3. Jenne "Jane" Acheson was born on Apr.14, 1869, in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
          5. James Acheson was born on Feb.22, 1845, in Derrylow, Elphim, Co. Roscommon. He married Rebecca Reid (born in 1847) on Aug.27, 1867, in Aconry, Co. Sligo. James, a 45-year-old farmer, and his 40-year-old wife, Rebecca, arrived in New York on Mar.5, 1894, on board the "Lucania" from Liverpool and Queenstown with their children, James (19), Mary J. (17), Richard (11), Kate (10), Robert (8) and Evans (4). They are bound for Wisconsin. In 1900-1910 they were living in Dale, Outagamie, Wisconsin. Rebecca died on Jan.9, 1916, in Oxnard, California. In 1920 James was living in Emery, Lewis, Washington. James died on Sep.19, 1924, in Forest, Lewis, Washington, USA. The children of James and Rebecca Acheson:
            1. Jane Acheson was born on Sep.15, 1868, in Derrylow, Croghan, Co. Roscommon. She married three times, to George B. Darling, to Clementine ?? and to Herbert P. Thayer. She died on Jul.27, 1921, in San Francisco, California, USA.
            2. Emily Acheson was born on May 2, 1870, in Derrylow, Croghan, Co. Roscommon.
            3. John George Acheson was born on Feb.13, 1872, in Derrylow, Croghan, Co. Roscommon. He married Rebecca McElroy on Mar.28, 1905, in Hortonia, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA. He died on Aug.3, 1928, in Oshkosh, Winnebgo, Wisconsin, USA.
            4. James Acheson was born on Mar.18, 1874, in Derrylow, Croghan, Co. Roscommon. In 1894, he emigrated to the USA with his parents, arriving in New York on Mar.5, 1894, on board the "Lucania" as a 19-year-old bound for Wisconsin. He married Elizabeth Bartell on Nov.5, 1897, in Portage, Wisconsin, USA. He died on Mar.12, 1937, in Neenah, Winnebago, Wisconsin, USA.
            5. Mary J. Acheson was born about 1876 in Derrylow, Croghan, Co. Roscommon. In 1894, she emigrated to the USA with her parents, arriving in New York on Mar.5, 1894, on board the "Lucania" as a 17-year-old bound for Wisconsin.
            6. Richard Alexander Acheson was born on Dec.8, 1879, in Derrylow, Croghan, Co. Roscommon. In 1894, he emigrated to the USA with his parents, arriving in New York on Mar.5, 1894, on board the "Lucania" as a 11-year-old bound for Wisconsin. He married Estelle Wilt on Nov.18, 1906, in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin, USA. He died on Jul.27, 1955, in Neenah, Winnebago, Wisconsin, USA.
            7. Kathryn Acheson was born on Jun.3, 1882, in Derrylow, Croghan, Co. Roscommon. In 1894, she emigrated to the USA with her parents, arriving in New York on Mar.5, 1894, on board the "Lucania" as a 10-year-old bound for Wisconsin. She married William Parish Graham on Jan.5, 1907, in San Bernadino, CA, USA. She died on Apr.1, 1935, in Oregon, USA.
            8. Robert Clifford Acheson was born on Aug.10, 1884, in Derrylow, Croghan, Co. Roscommon. In 1894, he emigrated to the USA with his parents, arriving in New York on Mar.5, 1894, on board the "Lucania" as a 8-year-old bound for Wisconsin. He first married Gladys Ethel Hall on Jun.14, 1908, in Los Angeles, California, USA. His second marriage was to Grace Peterson. Robert died in Centralia, Lewis, WA, USA, on Dec.7, 1969.
            9. Evans William Acheson was born on Jan.4, 1889, in Derrylow, Croghan, Co. Roscommon. In 1894, he emigrated to the USA with his parents, arriving in New York on Mar.5, 1894, on board the "Lucania" as a 4-year-old bound for Wisconsin. Evans served in the US military in 1917-19 and on Jul.25, 1918, was resident in San Diego, California. Evans married a woman named Elvera who was born in Pennsylvania in 1900. In 1927 he was living in Stockton, California, in 1930 he was living in Monterey, CA, and in 1930-35 in Carmel, CA. Evans and Elvera had no children. After Elvera died Evans married Ethel Margaret Truitner, born Aug.5, 1901, the daughter of Joseph Louis Truitner. Evans and Ethel had one child. After Ethel died in 1958 Evans married Beatrice Virginia King.
          6. Robert Major Acheson was born in 1845 in Derrylow, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. He emigrated to New Zealand and was married about 1870 to Annie Sinclair Allan in Riverton, Southland, New Zealand. He died on Oct.19, 1914, in Riverton and is buried there. The children of Robert and Annie Acheson included:
            1. Percy Acheson
            2. Frank Acheson who had a daughter Monica S. Acheson.
        5. Alexander "Sandy" Acheson was born in 1797 in Drumcree, Co. Leitrim. He married Jane Cox (born Oct.22, 1808) on Jan.13, 1823, in Elphrin, Co. Roscommon. He died on Dec.16, 1867, in Drumcree, Drumsna, Co. Leitrim. Alexander and Jane had thirteen children:
          1. Mary Acheson was born on Apr.19, 1824.
          2. Eleanor Acheson was born on Oct.20, 1825.
          3. William Acheson was born on Apr.18, 1827.
          4. James Acheson was born on Dec.15, 1828.
          5. Jane Acheson was born on Nov.26, 1830.
          6. John Acheson was born on Dec.31, 1832.
          7. Thomas Acheson was born on Oct.8, 1834.
          8. Elizabeth Acheson was born on Jul.17, 1837. She died in 1918.
          9. Susan Acheson was born on Mar.29, 1839.
          10. George Acheson of Drumcree, County Leitrim, was born on Aug.1, 1840 in County Leitrim and married his cousin (neice?), Elizabeth "Lizzie" J. Acheson (see below) (born in Croghan, Boyle, Co. Roscommon, in 1850) in Croghan on Feb.16, 1871. George became a mill owner, farmer and corn merchant in Drumcree, County Leitrim. He and his family belonged to the Plymouth Brethren. They are listed in the 1901 Census with their children Annabella, Emily and Albert. George died in 1930. George and Lizzie had several children among them:
            1. Annabella M. Acheson was born about 1880 in County Leitrim and is listed in the 1901 Cenusus as a 21-year-old unmarried farmer's daughter living with her parents in Drumcree, County Leitrim. She is later associated with Hollywood, which maybe where she lived.
            2. Emily F. M. Acheson was born about 1884 in County Leitrim and is listed in the 1901 Cenusus as an unmarried 17-year-old living with her parents in Drumcree, County Leitrim.
            3. Albert Edward Acheson was born about 1886 in County Leitrim and is listed in the 1901 Cenusus as an unmarried 15-year-old living with his parents in Drumcree, County Leitrim.
          11. Alexander Acheson was born on Feb.11, 1842.
          12. Margaret Acheson was born on Oct.27, 1843.
          13. Robert B. Acheson was born on Aug.23, 1847. Robert died on May 11, 1908. He had a daughter:
            1. Lily Acheson of Ballymore House who married her cousin William Anderson (see above) and had a son William Anderson who, as described above, had a daughter Ethel Anderson who married her cousin(?) Captain William Shaw Acheson (see above).
        6. Eleanor Acheson was born about 1799 in Drumcree, Drumsna, Co. Leitrim. She married George Anderson about 1830.
