Appendix 2D. Badger Family of Butler County, Pennsylvania

  1. William Badger was born in Londonderry, Ireland in 1773 (or 1781) and was married in Ireland to ?? Linsey, born in 1785. They emigrated to West Sunbury, Butler County, Pennsylvania, USA, prior to May 1803 when their son, James was born. They settled on what is known as the Thomas Coulter farm near West Sunbury. William was a veteran in the war of 1812. In 1818 he sold land to John Lindsay who was probably a relative of his wife and in 1824 he sold land to James Badger (his son ?) and to James Armstrong. William's first wife died in 1827 leaving a family of 9 children. He was married for the second time at the age of 54 on Jul.3, 1827, in Butler County to Mary Ferguson with whom he had two more children. William died in Butler County at the age of 57 in Oct. 1830. The children of William Badger:
    1. James L. Badger, the son of William and (Linsey) Badger, was born on May 31, 1803 in West Sunbury, Butler, Pennsylvania. He married Ann Burton on Sep.27, 1827, in Butler County. He died in West Liberty, Butler, Pennsylvania on Nov.24, 1884, and Ann died in 1888. James and Ann had children:
      1. Thomas Badger, the son of James L. and Ann Badger, was born on Jul.25, 1828, in Butler County, Pennsylvania. On Mar.8, 1851, he married Sarah Anderson, born on Mar.17, 1833. They moved to a farm near West Liberty where he spent his life as a farmer and carpenter. He died on May 13, 1907, aged 79. The children of Thomas and Sarah Badger:
        1. James McKinley Badger was born on May 20, 1853. He married Mary Jane McCLintock on Oct.24, 1872, and they lived near Ellwood City in western Pennsylvania. James died at the age of 75 on Aug.10, 1928. James and Mary had children:
          1. Virginia Florence Badger (1874-1939) was born on Apr.23, 1874, and died on Mar.17, 1939.
          2. Mary Elizabeth Badger (1876-1877) was born on Oct.3, 1876, in New Galilee, PA, and died in infancy.
          3. Margaret Badger (1878-1969) was born on May 27, 1878, in New Galilee, PA. Margaret died on May 2, 1969, at the age of 90.
          4. John A. Badger (1880-1959) was born on Sep.25, 1880, in New Galilee, PA. He died in Pennsylvania on May 15, 1959.
          5. James Brittain Badger (1883-1952) was born on Mar.18, 1883, in New Galilee, PA, and died on Aug.2, 1952.
          6. Ralph Dodds Badger (1886-1963) was born on Oct.12, 1886, and died in Pennsylvania on Jul.20, 1963.
          7. Thomas Sumner Badger (1890-1954) was born on Nov.3, 1890, and lived near Ellwood City. He died on Apr.28, 1954, in Pennsylvania. Thomas had children:
            1. Carl Badger (1921-1988) lived near Ellwood City. Carl had a daughter Carol McCullough.
        2. Anderson D. Badger was born in 1854 and died in 1856.
        3. Rachel Ann Badger was born on Feb.19, 1855, and married Andrew McClintock on Oct.23, 1873. She died in 1937 aged 82.
        4. Thomas Jefferson Badger was born in Oct. 1856 in Brady, Butler County, PA. In 1883 he married Mary Hulme. Thomas died in 1939 aged 83.
        5. Susan Elizabeth Badger was born in 1860 and married Henry H. Young (1860- ) in 1887.
        6. Martha H. Badger was born in Apr. 1861, and married Judson W. McKissick.
        7. Lauretta Jane Badger was born in Jun. 1863 in Brady, Butler County, PA, and married Peter Bowers (1849- ).
        8. Barnet Sumner Badger was born on Aug.29, 1865, in Brady, Butler, PA. He married Emma Zetta Wick (1867-1899) on Jun.27, 1893. Barnet died in 1948 aged 83.
        9. David S. Badger was born in 1868 in Brady, Butler, PA, and married Laura Williams (1870- ) on Apr.28, 1892.
        10. John Alexander Badger was born in Sep. 1869, in Brady, Butler, PA, and married Eva M. Dawson (1870- ) on Apr.20, 1893.
        11. Cyrus Crawford Badger was born on Nov.4, 1871, in Brady, Butler, PA, and married Mary B. Drake (1871- ) on Jul.2, 1895, in Jacksonville, Butler, PA. Cyrus died on Dec.10, 1904, in Whitestown, Butler County. Cyrus and Mary had a son:
          1. James Earl Badger was born on Apr.23, 1896.
      2. William C. Badger, the son of James L. and Ann Badger, was born on Feb.27, 1830, in Butler County, PA. On Mar.2, 1858, in Butler County, William married Jane Gilfillan (1834- ), born in Mercer County, PA, on Jan.17, 1832. At the beginning of the Civil Wae, William enlisted at Portsmouth, Ohio, on Oct.8, 1851, and served 3 years in the 56th Company, Ohio Veterans. At the end of this time he re-enlisted as a veteran in the same command. He received an honorable discharge in New Orleans on Apr.25, 1866, and returned to his home near West Liberty. William died in Liberty, Butler County, on Apr.18, 1912. William and Jane had children:
        1. Chester G. Badger was born about 1859 in Butler, County, PA.
        2. Anna E. Badger was born about 1861 in Ohio. On Sep.3, 1902, she married J.Wilson Dickey (1860- ) in West Liberty, Butler, PA.
        3. William C. Badger was born on May 10, 1863, in Brady, Butler, PA. He died on Jul.12, 1909, aged 46.
        4. Andrew Glenn Badger was born in 1868, in Brady, Butler, PA, and died in 1945 aged 77.
        5. Jemima J. Badger was born in 1871 in Brady, Butler, PA.
        6. Nancy B. Badger was born in 1873 in Brady, Butler, PA. On Jun.19, 1901, she married William H. Davis (1877- ) in Butler County.
        7. Margaret S. Badger was born in 1876 in Brady, Butler, PA. On Sep.20, 1904, she married H. Victor Eakin (1878- ) in Slippery Rock, Lawrence, PA.
      3. James Lindsay Badger, the son of James L. and Ann Badger, was born on Jul.30, 1832, on the South Branch of Slippery Rock. On Apr.29, 1852, in Butler he married Mary Nancy Gibson (1833-1912). They lived in West Liberty where he worked as a carpenter. Later they left and went to the Berghley farm where he farmed. Later he went into the store business and stil later took up butchering at Fairview. Later they moved to Iowa. James died in Jun.18, 1903, in Murray, Clark, Iowa. James and Mary had children:
        1. Nancy Elmza Badger was born on Jan.29, 1853, in Butler County, Pa. On Oct.12, 1876, she married Andrew Lewis Black (1852-1925) in Fairview, Butler. Nancy died on Aug.12, 1992, in West Liberty, Butler, PA.
        2. Melissa Badger was born about 1854 in Butler, PA, and died about 1877.
        3. Sylvester Hoadley Badger was born on Jan.15, 1855, in West Liberty, Butler, PA. About 1886 he married Sarah Daniels (1867-1935). Sylvester died in Princeton, PA, on Dec.31, 1931.
        4. Mary Cinderella Badger was born on May 6, 1858, in West Liberty, Butler, PA. On Jul.11, 1876, she married Perry Franklin Ray (1856-1918) in Fairview, PA. Mary died on Jan.18, 1896, in Butler County. Perry and Mary had a son:
          1. Charles Roy Ray was born in N.Washington, PA, on Apr.5, 1885, and married Katrina K. Petersen. Charles died in Blackfoot, Idaho, on Apr.7, 1937. Charles and Katrina had three children, Charles, Merl and Katrina Ray.
        5. Jane P. Badger was born about 1860 in West Liberty, Butler, PA.
        6. Margaret Jane Badger was born on Jan.7, 1861, in West Liberty, Butler, PA. On Feb.17, 1881, she married Lawrence Wellington Hoadley (1855-1924) in Bradford, McKean, PA. Margaret died on Mar.2, 1946, in Findley, Hancock, Iowa.
        7. Anna Elssie Badger was born on Feb.28, 1863, in Whitestown, Butler County, PA. On Jun.15, 1886, she married Sylvester Howell (1867-1941) in Osceola, Clarke, Iowa. Anna Died on Jan.18, 1949, in Weiser, Washington, Idaho.
        8. Robert John Badger was born on Jul.12, 1865, in Whitestown, Butler, PA. On Sep.4, 1892, he married Sarah Jane Westhafer (1873- ) in Murray, Clarke, Iowa. Robert died on Apr.7, 1954.
        9. Reas Evans Thomas Badger was born on Oct.29, 1868, in Whitestown, Butler, PA. About 1889 he married Linnie Morrow (1870-1904). Reas died on May 29, 1910, in Crawford, Delta, Colorado.
        10. Clara May Badger was born on Jan.16, 1870, in Pennsylvania. On Sep.18, 1888, she married Edward Daniel Burns (1865-1948) in Murray, Clark, Iowa. Clara died on Jun.11, 1939, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
        11. Wilbert James Badger was born on Jan.17, 1875, in Fairview, Butler, PA. On Oct.16, 1898, he married Estella Mansfield Westhafer (1877-1965) in Murray, Clark, Iowa. Wilbert died on Feb.16, 1943, in Murray, Clark, Iowa. Wilbert and Estella had children:

        14. Sadie Luetta Badger was born on Aug.19, 1876, in Fairview, Butler, PA. Sadie first married Asa Matthew Axtell (1869-1939) on May 21, 1893, in Murray, Clark, Iowa. Her second marriage was to Edward Daniel Burns (1865-1948) on Oct.22, 1942, in Crawford, Delta, Colorado. Sadie died on Mar.30, 1952, in Crawford, Delta, Colorado.
      4. Samuel W. Badger, the son of James L. and Ann Badger, was born on Aug.16, 1835, in Butler County, PA, on the South Branch of Slippery Rock. On Oct.2, 1856, he married Susanna Anderson (1840-1907), born May 15, 1836 and presumably the sister of his brother's wife, Sarah Anderson. They lived in West Liberty where Samuel was a harness maker. Later they moved to a farm near West Sunbury. Samuel died on Sep.18, 1912, in Sunbury, Butler, PA. Samuel and Susanna had children:
        1. David E. Badger was born on Jul.26, 1858, and married Ellen Susan Miller, born Nov.12, 1848. David died on Jun.13, 1928, and Ellen on Sep.18, 1935. David and Susan Badger had children:
          1. Henry Badger was born about 1880 and died on Jan.16, 1966.
          2. Samuel Venice Badger was born on Jun.3, 1883, in Butler County. Samuel married Myrtle C. Sage, born Nov.15, 1882, the daughter of Sylvester Sage (born Jul.29, 1856) and Sarah Cathrine (Davis) Sage (born Dec.15, 1860). Samuel died on Jan.10, 1969, and Myrtle died on Oct.28, 1975. Samuel and Myrtle Badger had children:
            1. Lester Venice Badger was born on Nov.24, 1905. Lester married Blanch Brown on Oct.3, 1928?. Blanch died on Oct.19, 1970, and Lester died on Jun.2, 1992.
            2. Sylvester David Badger was born on Oct.3, 1907. Sylvester married Grace Houk on Jul.15, 1927. Sylvester died on Sep.27, 1984.
            3. Elmer Earl Badger was born on Dec.14, 1909. Elmer married Edith Tillta(?) on Nov.26, 1936. Elmer died on Jun.16, 1990.
            4. Chester Merrill Badger was born on Feb.14, 1912. Chester married Judith Smith on Aug.7, 1939.
            5. Bertha May Badger was born on May 30, 1914. Bertha was married twice. First she married Jack Lutton(?) on Jun.29, 1935. Second she married Anthony Ferrigno on Sep.13, 1976. Anthony died on Nov.6, 1977.
            6. Pearl Kathrine Badger was born on Jul.8, 1916. Pearl was married twice. First she married William White on Sep.7, 1934. William died on Dec.24, 1969. Second she married Robert Thompson on Jul.22, 1988. Pearl died on Aug.23, 1994.
            7. Florence Myrtle Badger was born on Sep.2, 1923. Florence married Lawrence Baker(?) on Mar.21, 1946.
          3. William Badger died on Jan.12, 1962.
          4. Jesse Badger died in 1929.

      5. Matthew Badger, the son of James L. and Ann Badger, was born on Jan.6, 1838, in Brady Township, Butler County, PA. He married Mariah Baker and they moved to Slippery Rock where he worked as a harness maker. later they moved to a farm on Whipperwill Road near Prospect. Matthew died on Feb.10, 1920, in Franklin, Butler, PA. Matthew and Mariah had children:

      7. Nancy Badger, the daughter of James L. and Ann Badger, was born on Mar.9, 1843, near West Liberty in Butler County, PA. She married Franklin Baker (1836- ), born in Jan.1836. Nancy died in Feb.1898, aged 54. Nancy and Franklin had children:

      8. Robert J. Badger, the son of James L. and Ann Badger, was born on Sep.19, 1845, in Butler County, PA. He served in the Civil War and died in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina, on Oct.11, 1864, aged 19.

    2. Margaret Jane Badger, known as Peggy, was born on Feb.11, 1805 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William and (Linsey) Badger. On Nov.22, 1827, she married John Sterret in Butler County, Pennsylvania. They lived in Allegheny.
    3. Nancy Badger was born on Apr.21, 1807 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William and (Linsey) Badger. On Dec.22, 1829, she married William Early in Butler County, PA. They lived in Pittsburgh.
    4. William Badger was born on Jun.9, 1809 in Butler, Pennsylvania, the son of William and (Linsey) Badger. He lived with his parents until "he was able to keep himself. He then moved to Pittsburgh where he became a medical doctor.
    5. John Linsey Badger was born on Jul.30, 1811 in West Sunbury, Butler, Pennsylvania, the son of William and (Linsey) Badger. About 1832 he married Mariah Grubbs. They lived in West Sudbury where he worked as a carpenter.
    6. Esther Badger was born on Oct.4, 1813 in Butler, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William and (Linsey) Badger. She died in her youth in Butler County, PA, before 1820.
    7. Matthew William Badger was born on Oct.4, 1816 in Butler, PA, the son of William and (Linsey) Badger. He died young (before 1830).
    8. Robert Badger was born on Aug.10, 1818 in Butler County, PA, the son of William and (Linsey) Badger. In 1842 he married Nancy Jane Graham, born in 1820. They lived in Portersville, Butler, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a harness make until his death on Jun.26, 1892.
    9. Mary Ann Badger was born on Mar.5, 1821 in Butler, Pennsylvania, the daughter of William and (Linsey) Badger, and married John Jones, born in 1820. They lived on a farm near Ross Point.

    1. Eliza Badger, the daughter of William and Mary (Ferguson) Badger, was born on Sep.3, 1829.
    2. Ferguson Badger, the son of William and Mary (Ferguson) Badger, was born on Jun.8, 1831, in Butler County, PA.   1. Robert Badger was born in Ireland in 1765 and may have been a brother of William (above). Robert married a woman named Margaret, born about 1765. Robert was resident in Union County, PA, in 1820. Robert died on Oct.16, 1837, in Union County. Robert and Margaret had children:
    1. Robert Badger (1797-1866) was born about 1797 in Union County, PA, and first married a woman named Margaret (1809- ) with whom he had one son. Secondly, he married Catherine McMurtrie (1794-1858) in White Springs, Union County, in 1815. In 1850 Robert was resident in Lancaster, Stephenson, Illinois. Robert died on Mar.27, 1866, in Lena, Stephenson, Illinois. His children:
      1. Samuel Badger, son of Robert and Margaret Badger, was born in Nov.12, 1829, in Pennsylvania. He was resident in Stephenson County, Illinois, in 1850, 1860, 1865 and 1870; in 1885, 1900 and 1905 he was resident in Jackson, Jewell, Kansas. Samuel died in Jackson on May 9, 1909.
      2. Catherine Badger, daughter of Robert and Catherine Badger, was born in 1832.
      3. John Badger, son of Robert and Margaret Badger, was born in 1834.
    2. Samuel Badger (1800- ), born in 1800, married Elizabeth Frederick (1801-1883). Samuel died in Union County, PA. The children of Samuel and Elizabeth Badger:
      1. John Calvin Badger (1820-1907) was born on Jan.17, 1820, in Pennsylvania. In 1841 he married Hester Esther Klingman in Pennsylvania. John died on Mar.18, 1907, in Union County, PA.
      2. Margaret Badger (1821-) was born on Mar.27, 1821, in Pennsylvania. In 1880 she was living in Watsontown, PA, and in 1900 in Huntingdon, PA.
      3. Lewis Badger (1822-1898) was born on Sep.23, 1822, in Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth M. Miller (1824-1912). Lewis died on Jul.21, 1898, in Union County, PA.
      4. William Badger (1825-) was born on Oct.1, 1825, in Pennsylvania. He married Elvina Orwig (1827-) on Apr.26, 1849, in Hartley, PA. They lived in Union County and had children:

The following family is almost certainly related to the above family.

  1. John Badger was born in Londonderry, Ireland in 1782. He married Isabella Hudson and they emigrated to USA in 1822. They first settled in Clinton, Oneida County, New York, but in 1829 moved to Butler County, Pennsylvania and settled on a property next to William Badger who is listed first in the preceding family and was probably his brother. John became a US citizen in 1813 and belonged to the United Presbyterian Church. He died on Sep.1, 1871. John and Isabella had 11 children including:
    1. James Badger was born in Ireland in 1813. Like his father he belonged to the United Presbyterian Church. James died in Butler County in 1900.
