Family of William Porterfield of Co. Cavan:

This family constructed from information listed in File 11a and provided by Dannah McCauley (DannahMcC@aol.com):

    1. William Porterfield, born in 1729, was probably the same as the William Porterfield who was a member of the 16th Regiment of Foot British Army stationed in Ireland. Along with many men from the Regiment including a William McAuley, William Porterfield joined the Masonic Lodge in Ballyjamesduff, County Cavan, on Aug.3, 1758. It seems possible that when he left the Army, William Porterfield settled in Ballyjamesduff. William Porterfield, a 92-year-old farmer, is listed in a fragment of the 1821 Census of Ireland as living in House 10, townland of Clare, parish of Crosserlough, County Cavan, with his 87-year-old wife Mary Porterfield and their 16-year-old granddaughter, Bella Porterfield, a flax spinner. From the records of Lord Farnham's Estate we learn that, on Sep.6, 1782, William Porterfield was paying rent on 17 acres in "Part of Clare Community called Clarebeg (lower Clare)". William died about 1822 in Co. Cavan. Mary also died about 1822. William and Mary Porterfield's children included:

In the census, John is listed as a 56-year-old farmer living with his 43-year-old wife, Susanagh (a flax spinner) and their four sons and three daughters as listed below. The children of John and Susanagh Porterfield:
        1. Mary Anne Porterfield was born about 1795 in Ballyjamesduff, Co. Cavan. About 1815 she married John Watson, born about 1774 in Co. Cavan. John died in Co. Cavan after 1831. Mary Anne and her children emigrated to Canada in 1850; Mary Anne died on Apr.29, 1870, in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, and is buried in St. John's Cemetery in Tecumseth, Ontario. Karen Gosling (karengosling@live.com), who lives in England, is the 3X great granddaughter of John and Mary Anne Watson. The children of John and Mary Anne Watson:
