AUTHOR'S HELP NOTES:

The following are notes on tools used in the construction of this website.

MAJOR FILE ARRANGEMENT:

Note that there are two versions of the major, start file as follows:

FLUIDBOOK is a stripped down version and a much smaller version of XFLUIDBOOK that contains only the .htm and .pdf files. It is the version that is copied to the public access sites at dankat.com and the Caltech access sites.

XFLUIDBOOK contains all the files used in the construction of the internet book. This is the working site where all the component files are constructed and held. It is a very large set of files.

To set a link from one .pdf page to another:

  1. Bring up the .pdf file of origin
  2. Left click on Link Tool at the top
  3. With left click draw rectangular outline around the link
  4. This brings up the ``Link Properties'' box:
    1. Choose: Type: Visible Rectangle
    2. Choose: Highlight: None
    3. Choose: Type: Open file
    4. Click "Select File" and then select the destination .pdf file
    5. Choose: Width: Thin
    6. Choose: Color: Blue
    7. Choose: Style: Solid
    8. Click on "Set Link"
  5. Back in origin page right click on link and left click on "Follow Link", left clicking on "Save Changes". [Note: to set link more permanently get out of origin page and then bring it up again.]

To run links:

  1. Left click on boxed link to get to destination .pdf file
  2. To get back to origin file use the bold arrows in the top toolbar or right click on destination page anywhere and left click on "Go to previous view"
  3. To delete a link, in the origin page right click on the link and then left click on "Delete".

To create a figure (provisional):

  1. Create the figure using Powerpoint (adjust size finally?)
  2. Save the slide from powerpoint by clicking on the slide and then the copy symbol in the overhead menu
  3. Paste this into Paint and adjust the frame as desired using crop
  4. Save this as a .bmp file in the bmpfigure file
  5. Import this file to Photoshop and save it as an .eps file in the Figures folder [Make sure the Photoshop setting allows color]
  6. [Do not change the size in Paint or Photoshop and do not use the size control in the .tex file]

To insert a photograph in the .pdf file:

  1. Go to the .tex source file
  2. To insert a .bmp file, at the appropriate point in the .tex text, insert an instruction like:

    \special{bmp:C:/file1/file2/photo.bmp x=3in y=2in}

    where the photograph is stored at /file1/file2/photo.bmp and you want a horizontal width of 3in. and a height of 2in.

  3. To insert a .eps file, at the appropriate point in the .tex text, insert

    \begin{figure}
    \centerline{\epsfig{file=file1/file2/photo.eps}}
    \end{figure}

    where the photograph is stored at /file1/file2/photo.eps.

To insert a movie in the .pdf file:

  1. The movie has to be in the .avi format. If your movie is in a different format you might consider purchasing the least expensive version of Quicktime which will allow you to convert most formats to .avi.
  2. In preparation for the insertion of the movie you will need to format the .tex file so as to allow an appropriate space in the .ftp file. You may also wish to insert a caption for the movie next to this space.
  3. To insert the movie, bring up the .ftp file and left click on the Movie Tool in the lower toolbar.
  4. With left click draw a rectangular outline in the space for the moview giving it the dimensions you wish to have for the movie. One modification you should make is to allow some extra room below the rectangle and above the text that follows the movie for the movie control toolbar that will appear.
  5. Drawing the rectangle brings up the ``Movie Properties'' box:
    1. Choose "Use file on local volume"
    2. Click on choose and click on movie.avi file (which must be in the same folder as the .ftp file)
    3. Click on "Open"
    4. In "Movie Poster" click on "Retrieve Poster from Move" (I have not yet gotten this to work).
    5. Check the "Show Controller" box (see above)
    6. Choose the "Mode" that you want (whether the movie should repeat or not)
    7. Do not check "Use floating window"
    8. Choose: Width: Thin
    9. Choose: Style: Solid
    10. Choose: Color: Blue
    11. Click on "OK"
  6. Back in the .ftp file, right click on the rectangle and left click on "Play Movie" will bring up the movie complete with control bar beneath the rectangle. [Note: to set the permanent link, get out of origin page and then bring it up again - after this a single left click in the rectangle will play the movie.]
  7. To delete a movie, in the .ftp page right click on the rectangle and then left click on "Delete".
